Mold and dismissal: Family in Göttingen fights for a new home

Today the fate of a mother with four children in Göttingen made waves. The tenant, who lives in a problem-plagued apartment block on Groner Landstrasse, made her unsustainable housing condition public to NDR. A few days later, on Monday, she received a notice of termination from the property management. This raises questions about the safety and adequacy of housing, particularly given the family's urgent need to find new accommodation.

The tenant has been fighting for a new place to live for some time. However, her Romanian name and current home address make finding a new apartment difficult. The lawyer Sven Adam explains that there is currently no eviction action and that it has no chance of success. However, the family would like to move out as quickly as possible; Adam has therefore requested alternative accommodation, possibly in an emergency shelter. The city is currently reviewing the situation.

Problematic living conditions

The background to the termination is also revealing. The property management justifies the immediate termination with alleged overcrowding in the apartment and outstanding utility bills. However, tenancy lawyer Nils Spörkel expresses doubts about overcrowding. Adam and his colleague have filed urgent applications with the relevant jurisdictions to provide the family with emergency accommodation and to have the apartment declared uninhabitable. The tenancy lawyer sees the termination as a reaction to the NDR report about non-functioning central heating and mold growth.

As far as the heating situation is concerned, the property management has stated that there is no money for repairs to the heating and is offering the affected tenants radiators as a temporary solution. These are to be issued in the first week of November, but initially only to paying tenants. Meanwhile, tenant Calina Farcas-Moldovan heats with a stove while property management ignores other problems such as trash, rats and mold. The question arises as to how long the tenants will have to live in such unacceptable conditions.

An appeal for support

This situation is not an isolated case and is consistent with an increase in families in housing emergencies, as outlined by the BAG Homeless Aid. In November 2020, the BAG board issued the recommendation to provide family-supporting help to overcome social difficulties. It is urgent that such recommendations are put into practice in order to support affected families and enable them to lead a dignified life.

Given these devastating circumstances, it is time for those responsible to not only find solutions, but also to ensure that such cases are avoided in the future. How long should Family Farcas-Moldovan wait until their rights and well-being are finally taken seriously? The city authorities are called upon to act quickly and offer solutions that help the affected families, as is the wish of the BAG homeless assistance.

In summary, it is not just about finding a new apartment, but about the fundamental right to a safe and healthy home for everyone.
