HSV moves into the cup round of 16: Glatzel's penalty secures victory in Heidenheim

On October 28, 2025, Hamburger SV won a narrow but important victory in the DFB Cup against 1. FC Heidenheim. With a 1-0 win, Hamburg prevailed in the first round of the competition and moved into the round of 16. With only 15,000 spectators in the stadium, the atmosphere was heated, even though the Heidenheim team had to struggle with a weak league record - it was already their seventh defeat in their tenth competitive game.

The game started promisingly for HSV, who missed two big chances in the early stages. Miro Muheim was denied right at the start by Heidenheim's Omar Traoré and Ransford-Yeboah Königsdörffer met Heidenheim goalkeeper Diant Ramaj in the 7th minute. Even though Heidenheim's offense remained pale and coach Frank Schmidt saw a yellow card in the first half, it was another game incident that shaped the match: Tim Siersleben was the last man to see the red card in the 44th minute after a foul.

Excitement in the second round

After the break, Heidenheim retreated and HSV couldn't find the right access to the goal. Vuskovic and Vieira had further chances in the 73rd and 75th minutes, but these also remained unused. After a controversial foul by Julian Niehues on Fabio Vieira, HSV finally received a penalty in the 83rd minute. Robert Glatzel, who had previously come on as a substitute, took responsibility and skillfully converted the penalty into the left corner. In doing so, he secured the lead for his team.

Despite the deficit, Heidenheim continued to fight, but was unable to pose any significant threat in the final minutes. Instead, Heidenheim's team manager Alexander Raaf also saw a red card after another heated moment, while referee Benjamin Brand made several controversial decisions in the game. At the end of the game, coach Frank Schmidt also saw the yellow-red card, and the match ended 1-0 for Hamburger SV.

The next challenges

With this victory behind them, Hamburger SV will approach the upcoming tasks with optimism. For 1. FC Heidenheim, however, an important phase lies ahead in order to overcome their weak form in the league. After this game it remains to be seen how the team prepares for the next challenges. HSV, on the other hand, can now look forward to the draw for the round of 16 and hopes to get a good draw there.
