Drug trip in Wolfenbüttel: Police thwart chaotic escape of thieves!

On Wednesday, June 4th, Wolfenbüttel experienced a turbulent day that impressively demonstrated the potential for criminal activity under the radar. At 12:15 p.m., an unlocked van was stolen from a construction site on the “Neuer Weg” street. A short time later, a 37-year-old man and his 34-year-old accomplice stole a handbag from an unlocked employee office in the Wolfenbüttel Clinic. Both are already known to the police and are among the suspects in this criminal series, which took place between 12:15 p.m. and 4:50 p.m., reports news38.de.

After the theft, the 37-year-old used the stolen van in a parking lot on Schweigerstrasse while he was under the influence of drugs and without a driver's license. At around 1:30 p.m. there was a joint theft of power tools from a hardware store and care products from a drugstore. The transport of the loot was observed by attentive residents in Wendessen, who stopped the suspicious transporter. Despite the suspect's attempt to escape, the police were alerted in time and were able to catch them after a short pursuit.

Obstructions and resistance to the police

The behavior of the two suspects was extremely disgraceful. Between 2:20 p.m. and 4:30 p.m., the woman insulted the police officers and made provocative gestures. After her release from the police station, she collided with a stroller with an 85-year-old woman on Lindener Strasse, which resulted in the senior citizen being injured and her walker being damaged. The police had to contend with not only insults but also physical attacks on police buildings due to her aggressive behavior as she banged on the glass in the waiting area. Eventually the man was asked to give a blood sample and was taken into custody on an arrest warrant. The woman was released after police action. Both suspects now face numerous criminal charges, including theft, assault and resisting state authority.

These incidents are not the only ones that have caused unrest in Wolfenbüttel recently. Police teams launched a large-scale control operation in the city center on Tuesday evening. The reason for this extraordinary effort was the improper behavior of a group of minors and young adults who attracted attention through disturbing the peace and disrespectful behavior on the Kornmarkt and in the pedestrian zone. Mayor Ivica Lukanic praised the police's actions and highlighted the importance of prevention and integration work, while increasing the visible presence in critical places in the coming weeks.

Effective measures required

The situation reflects a worrying trend. According to current statistics on youth crime in Germany, youth violence recorded a peak of around 13,800 cases in 2024, which is more than twice as high as in 2016. The behavior of young people in particular raises questions. Causes such as psychological stress during the corona pandemic and many risk factors among young people seeking protection are cited as explanations. Despite an overall decline in the proportion of young suspects, the problem of youth crime remains present and requires urgent preventive measures. The police are faced with the challenge of finding effective solutions to prevent criminal careers at an early stage.

Wolfenbüttel is therefore called upon to stand together and resolutely oppose these developments. It is up to the community to work together to find ways to regain peace and a sense of security in the city. More information on this topic can be found on regionalheute.de and statista.com be found.
