Bloody attack on the Mittelland Canal: 43-year-old seriously injured!

On the night of Saturday, July 10, 2025, a group of three men were attacked on the Mittelland Canal in Wolfsburg. The incident occurred around 1:35 a.m. as the group was heading toward the city center. Suddenly several people emerged from an adjacent bush and attacked the men. Tragically, a 43-year-old from Wolfsburg was seriously injured and had to be taken to Wolfsburg Hospital in an ambulance. One of the companions, a 30-year-old friend, suffered minor injuries. The police are investigating and have already provisionally arrested two suspects, but they were later released. In order to clarify the incident, the police are looking for witnesses and are asking for information by calling 05363-809700.

The increase in acts of violence has also been clearly noticeable in Wolfsburg in recent years. More and more cases of physical assault, particularly among young people, are causing public concern. It was only on June 27, 2024 that there was a similar situation at Willy-Brandt-Platz, where an 18-year-old from Wolfsburg was also the victim of a physical altercation. A witness noted that several young people were involved and that the perpetrators fled immediately before the police arrived. These incidents are part of a worrying trend in which youth violence in Germany has reached an all-time high.

A worrying trend

The increase in juvenile crime cannot be overlooked. According to statistics, there were around 13,800 cases of youth violence in 2024, which is more than twice as high as in 2016. Young people between the ages of 14 and 17 and young adults up to the age of 20 are particularly affected. It turns out that almost three quarters of young suspects are male, a fact that is influenced by factors such as hormonal changes and social role models. The proportion of men among the juveniles convicted in court is an oppressive 84 percent.

It is being discussed whether harsher punishments or a reduction in the age of criminal responsibility can be effective measures against increasing youth crime. But experts are primarily calling for more preventative approaches, such as those that should be promoted in child and youth welfare, in order to offer young people at risk a better path. The psychological stress that many young people are experiencing due to the corona pandemic could also play a role in the development of criminal behavior.

The current situation in Wolfsburg and the nationwide trends show that it is time to find solutions to ensure safety for everyone and, in particular, to promote the well-being of our young people. It remains to be hoped that the citizens of Wolfsburg will remain vigilant and support the police in their investigations.
