Volkswagen opens sausage hall: Currywurst as a cult treasure!
Hand on heart: Who doesn't love the good old currywurst? An Austrian dish with real cult status - and the fact that it is also very similar in northern Germany is shown by the example of Volkswagen in Wolfsburg. The sausages are not only on the lunch table there, but are also part of the company's history.
Since 1973, Volkswagen has been producing its own currywurst in an in-house butcher shop at the Wolfsburg plant. This butcher's shop has a tradition that dates back to 1950, when it was originally founded to feed workers after the war. Over the years, production has developed significantly. At peak times there are up to seven million sausages per year, which are made there from regional pork, without any phosphates or glutamate. During this time, between 10 and 12 tons of meat are processed every week by 25 dedicated employees who know how to best showcase the sausage enjoyment - the official name is “Currybockwurst” and has a fat content of 20%, which makes it significantly lighter than usual sausages.
Unique recipe and new sausage hall
A very special highlight is the opening of the new sausage hall in Hall 50a. In addition to the butcher shop, this will become an exhibition space and place of appreciation for all sausage lovers and employees. Here visitors can admire historical pictures and old machines. The real treasure, however, is a safe in which the original currywurst recipe from 1973 is kept. Only two people hold the keys to this culinary secret, which was already mentioned in a song by Herbert Grönemeyer.
To prepare currywurst, the ingredients are chopped up and then stuffed into casings. The sausage is then smoked, dried and cooked - a process that not only affects the taste buds, but also creates anticipation for the distinctive aroma. Each piece of sausage is traditionally served with a special spiced ketchup and curry powder. Anyone who gets a taste for them can not only enjoy them at the factory, but also buy them in the VfL Wolfsburg stadium or in Edeka stores.
Part of the company culture
The VW currywurst is more than just a snack – it is a piece of company history. It is offered during factory tours and the employees particularly appreciate it during the breakfast break at 8 a.m. The currywurst has taken on a permanent place in corporate culture and shows how food can also build bridges - between tradition and modernity, between work and pleasure.
Over the years, Volkswagen has developed from a supplier of cars into one of the most successful volume manufacturers in the world, which is now also following the trends of electromobility and digitalization. But despite all this progress, the good old currywurst will not be forgotten - it remains a symbol of the solidarity among employees and a delicious souvenir for visitors.
Whether in the stadium, in the canteen area or in the new sausage hall, the VW Currywurst connects people and stories in Wolfsburg - and to a certain extent in Austria.
