Aachen invests millions in cycle paths – outcry from drivers!

In Aachen there is a lot of buzz around the topic of cycling - a matter that has been the subject of a lot of conversation in recent years. The city has set itself the goal of comprehensively improving the cycling infrastructure and is investing an impressive six million euros to achieve this. This emerges from the current WDR report. Despite a continuous increase in the number of cyclists, the expansion of the required infrastructure is lagging significantly behind.

The recently published mobility report 2024 shows that of the planned 60 kilometers of cycle priority routes, only nine kilometers have been implemented since 2019. The General German Bicycle Club (ADFC) sees a clear need for action here: Many of the existing cycle paths are too narrow, in poor condition or blocked by parked cars. This is reflected in the complaints expressed by various interest groups, particularly from the craft and care sectors. An example of this is the “Mobile Reason” association, which has collected tens of thousands of signatures against transport policy.

Dispute over traffic measures

The disputes seem deadlocked: While some residents and cyclists see the switch to more bicycle-friendly traffic planning as central to quality of life and climate protection, others see the measures as an economic risk. One of the most controversial points is the Löhrergraben intersection, where a red-marked bicycle lane has been set up and cars are banned from passing through. These regulations are ignored by many drivers, which forced the city to make improvements and put up new signs.

In order to counteract the growing protests, the city has already introduced the first exceptions. However, a general citizens' initiative from the association was rejected by the city council. This conflict highlights the different views on cycling and is part of a broader mobility transition that is underway in Aachen, but does not yet involve all citizens.

Focus on environmentally friendly cycling

In order to further promote cycling in the city, the Mobility Report 2024 provides for central measures that are intended not only to support cyclists, but also to improve the availability of local public transport (ÖPNV). This includes, among other things, new vehicles, barrier-free stops and improved bus route timing. The city is also focusing on making footpaths more attractive in order to increase the mobility of all citizens.

The importance of well-developed cycling traffic is underlined not least by experts from the Federal Environment Agency. They emphasize that in metropolitan areas up to 30% of car journeys could be shifted to cycling. Cycling is not only an environmentally friendly alternative, but also improves the quality of life: it reduces pollutants in the air and promotes health. Cyclists also have to take up less space and help reduce traffic noise.

It is encouraging that cycling not only represents individual mobility, but is also viewed as a lifestyle trend. Fashionable cycling clothing and accessories are becoming increasingly popular, and many citizens use public bike rental systems. These not only complement mobility, but also help to reduce car traffic, which is not least in line with climate goals.

In summary, Aachen is at a turning point in its transport policy. It remains to be seen whether the city can manage the balancing act between the various interests and whether the conversion of the cycling infrastructure will go more smoothly in the future. One thing is clear: the discussion about cycling will be with us for a long time.
