Left warns: European world -eaded claim leads into the madness!

At the Munich Security Conference, US Vice President J. D. Vance is criticized in the European countries and their dealings with global security issues. Jan van Aken, the chairman of the left, immediately reacted to Vance's statements. In a press release, he emphasizes that the Europeans should not be intimidated by the United States and warns of the fatal wrong way of being a European claim to be world. Van Aken calls the United Nations as the only legitimate framework for solving global challenges and emphasizes that a greater independence of Europe is necessary, but not in the form of a new power block.

The left is described as confused as a foreign policy in the current political situation. Despite the changed global situation and the spin-off of the Wagenknecht alliance, the party remains reserved in its rhetoric and its demands. Among other things, these include no additional money needs for the Bundeswehr, the end of military service and a deduction of the Bundeswehr from foreign missions. In its manifesto, NATO is criticized as a "pure military alliance to enforce national and economic interests", and the example of the Iraq war is cited. DIE LINKE is presented as irresponsible because it relies on uncertain mediation offers by Brics countries in the Ukraine conflict.

dangers from new power blocks

In addition, van Aken indicates an impending new block thinking between the USA, China and Russia. He asks the Federal Government and the EU not to give in to this return to the back yard policy. However, Van Aken sees European politics as disoriented, in particular with regard to the almost exclusive focus on arms deliveries instead of peace initiatives. He wonders where the diplomatic advances of Europe remain with important countries such as India, China or Brazil.

The European Parliament has analyzed NATO's role in the EU security architecture in the past and emphasized several important documents that regulate cooperation between EU and NATO. According to the parliament, both organizations must intensify their cooperation in order to maximize resources and avoid institutional conflicts. The North Atlantic Treaty and the contracts of Lisbon form important foundations for this cooperation. 94 % of the EU population are citizens of NATO member states, which underlines the need for close cooperation.

The role of the United Nations

In view of the aggressive foreign policy in Russia, responsibility for peace and security is seen, especially at the VN security council, which acts as the main person responsible for world peace. Van Aken calls for strengthening the UN and a comprehensive transformation of Europe to the peace power instead of concentrating on military armament. He warns in particular of a possible Trump-Putin deal that could leave the European countries in a middle position and should lead to a new deterrent debate in Europe even after a possible end of the war.

DIE LINKE sees Germany's defense, since it does not recognize the reality of Russia's attacks and its threat. Political developments in countries such as Great Britain, Hungary, Slovakia and Italy are considered additional threats to the EU. In view of the increasing military expenditure, the left is not assessed as unable to achieve its political goals in accordance with the government parties SPD and Greens.

Overall, the reaction to the Munich Security Conference shows that in German politics there is an increasing debate about the role of NATO, the need for independence in foreign policy and the importance of peace initiatives. In this context, the question arises how Europe will position itself in a world of new power blocks and whether it is possible to use its diplomatic skills in order to play a real role as peace power.
