On October 31, 2025, an important project will be launched in the Aachen region that will deal with the unbundling of the rail node. The go.Rheinland association has commissioned a comprehensive study that aims to analyze bottlenecks in local, long-distance and freight transport and find solutions. The aim is to strengthen the rail infrastructure in the Rhenish region and eliminate increasing congestion. Bottleneck analysis and expansion concepts
The Aachen consulting firm “quattron” is involved in the project and is working on an expansion concept together with “railistics” from Wiesbaden. The increasing volumes of goods handled in the ZARA ports (Zeebrugge, Antwerp, Rotterdam, Amsterdam) are the main cause of the rail line's capacity limits. The study will be carried out over a period of 12 months and is intended to provide conclusive results that will be compared with the plans for the Deutschlandtakt and the NRW 2040 target network.
The knowledge collected serves to identify discrepancies and the need for action so that the future of rail transport in the region can be sustainably secured.
