Münster starts Revolution: New platform for MINT students!
The University of Münster has decided to participate in an innovative pilot project that establishes a new platform for software development in science. As part of the “Git.NRW” project, the “Gitlab” platform is used, which is specially designed for the MINT area (mathematics, computer science, natural sciences, technology). Here, researchers and students can publish, discuss and develop software and codes. This initiative became necessary because a cross -university exchange was not possible beforehand, which has severely restricted cooperation in the academic context. According to the University of Münster, the project is coordinated by RWTH Aachen, with other universities such as the Cologne University of Technology and the Universities of Duisburg-Essen and Cologne.
The project is funded by the Ministry of Culture and Science in the State of North Rhine-Westphalia and takes place in cooperation with the digital University of North Rhine-Westphalia. The goal is to create a platform with infrastructures, resources and software services in order to promote a networked research and educational landscape in North Rhine-Westphalia. The project is currently in the pilot phase, in which relatives of the five participating universities can test the platform and give feedback.
long -term goals and usage offers
In the long term, the aim is to integrate all universities in North Rhine-Westphalia into the platform in order to strengthen digital cooperation and sovereignty. The platform is intended to cover a variety of areas, including software development, research data management, project management and teaching. Particularly noteworthy is the simplified access of the users to knowledge and research data, which could make academic work easier. The "Git.nrw" project goes beyond pure software development. It aims to develop training and further education offers for a central Gitlab instance that should act as a service offer for universities of the digital university of North Rhine-Westphalia and its cooperation partner. There are currently many local Gitlab instances, which limits cooperative cooperation within the university community. By creating technical, organizational and content requirements, comprehensive support for software development and teaching across the borders of individual institutions is offered. Further information on this is available on the project website git.nrw
digital challenges and cooperation
Digitization is an enormous challenge for German universities, especially with regard to generative AI models and cyber attacks. This is also emphasized by the University Rectors' Conference (HRK), which adheres to its demands on the further development of digital teaching and infrastructures. In the coalition agreement of November 2021, a federal program "digital university" is planned to support innovative teaching approaches, qualification measures and cyber security. Despite the initial recommendations of the BMBF to promote cooperation structures, these have been postponed for the time being.
The HRK emphasizes how important it is to create digital cooperation structures in order to avoid double structures and to ensure digital sovereignty for both students and teachers. This requires sufficient digital infrastructure and personnel with appropriate expertise. The cooperation between the universities should be promoted by coordinated processes in order to meet the requirements locally, regionally and internationally.
In summary, the pilot project of the University of Münster shows the efforts and challenges in the field of digital university development and illustrates how important cooperation is in times of digitization.
