TU Clausthal welcomes Prof. Dr. Tillmann: New impulses for mathematics!
Clausthal-Zellerfeld, Deutschland - The Technical University of Clausthal with great joy the appointment of Dr. Andreas Tillmann announced the university professor for discrete optimization in the Faculty of Mathematics. TU President Dr.-Ing. Sylvia Schattauer emphasizes the importance of this appointment for the aim of the university to fill all professorships in the mathematics department. Prof. Tillmann will therefore play an important role in the further development of mathematics at the university, which is increasingly also oriented towards practical areas of application. The obviousness of his skills and experiences makes him a valuable asset for the TU Clausthal.
Prof. Tillmann studied at the Technical University of Braunschweig and gained his degree in financial and business mathematics in 2009. After the doctorate in 2013 at the TU Darmstadt with a focus on mathematics, several career followed. He worked as a postdoc at the TU Darmstadt from 2014 to 2016 and in 2017 to 2019 as a youth group leader at the Chair of Operations Research and Visual Computing Institutes at RWTH Aachen. A research stay as a guest scientist at the "Canada Excellence Research Chair Data Science for Real-Time Decision Making" at the Polytechnique Montréal enriched his professional career.
academic career and research focus
The new professor not only has an impressive academic journey, but also has a variety of research focuses. His research activities focus on the theoretical and practical aspects of discrete optimization, including complexity in compressed sensing as well as signal and image processing. His work in the field of mechanical learning and operations research also find special attention. These interdisciplinary approaches will shape his courses at the TU Clausthal, which include both basics and specialized topics for master's programs.
In the last semesters, Tillmann already appeared in representation professorships at the TU Clausthal and will now take over the professorship for discrete optimization after his habilitation at the TU Braunschweig. His goal is not only to teach the students in mathematics, but also to bring them closer to the practical applications of this discipline in order to optimally prepare them for their future professional challenges.
relevance for science and teaching
The employment of Prof. Dr. Tillmann is not only a win for the TU Clausthal, but is also of greater importance for the scientific community in Germany. In view of its multi -layered research activities and courses for optimizing and mathematics, it is expected to contribute to the future development of the department.
in a familiar environment such as research at RWTH Aachen, where ten doctoral positions are currently advertised in various mathematical research areas, the connection between teaching and research from a different perspective can also be seen. This development testifies to the continuing relevance of mathematics and opens up new perspectives for prospective scientists who want to develop in their careers. The special priorities include optimization and machine learning, which will also be important for Prof. Tillmann's work at the TU Clausthal.
The entire University of Clausthal is called Prof. Dr. Welcome to Andreas Tillmann and looks forward to the exciting impulses that he will use both in teaching and research.
