Bochum's Schlegelturm: New city museum and viewpoint in sight!
Bochum, Deutschland - The Schlegelturm in Bochum, a striking landmark of the city, is to be brought to a new use. The electoral group "Die Stadt designer" has made a proposal to convert the 34 -meter -high tower into a modern tourist attraction. A transformation of the Schlegelturm to a city museum is planned, which is intended to address different epochs of Bochum's city history on eight floors, from prehistoric times to the future. In addition to the exhibition, a viewing platform and a café are planned to be accessible to the public, even without a museum embroidery. The neighboring brewhouse could also serve as a place for special exhibitions and a small museum shop. The Schlegelturm is located directly at the town hall and next to the house of knowledge under construction, which promises its attractiveness. According to Ruhr24 , the city of Bochum is planning for the listed tower worth renovation worth around 6.9 million euros, which is a modern facade as well should include a new tower head.
The city of Bochum bought the strongly dilapidated malt silo high-rise in 2021 together with the brewhouse. The estimated renovation costs are now up to 8 million euros, significantly higher than the initial estimates of 4.6 million euros. However, the city administration has not yet published any specific plans for the future use of the tower. After the top floors are supposed to remain empty, you want to collect ideas for use in other workshops. The proposal also provides to integrate the city archive, currently housed in the Aral House, into the new museum. However, the Aral House is considered too expensive for long-term use.
The planned permanent exhibition
The permanent exhibition in the Schlegelturm is designed as an immersive experience and should extend thematically over the different floors. Every floor concept is dedicated to a specific topic that reflects the development of the city:
- 8. Stock: Development of the climate and flora
- 7. Stock: pre -industrial Bochum
- 6. Stock: industrialization until the end of World War II
- 5. Stock: reconstruction of the city
- 4. Stock: traffic over time
- 3. Stock: people of the city
- 2. Stock: politics in the city
- 1. Stock: look into the future
Every presentation in the permanent exhibition could take up to ten minutes. An additional highlight are the so-called Schlegel catacombs, which could be used for an exhibition via the Schlegelbrauerei.
strategic importance of the city center
The planned redesign of the Schlegelturm fits into the broader vision for the development of downtown Bochum. This provides to actively shape the constant change in the inner cities and to react to technical, economic and social change. The "Bochum 2030 Vision Downtown", which was presented in 2017, offers perspectives for future development. The integrated urban development concept (ISEK) aims to make the city center attractive and to promote funding from the federal, state and the EU. A lively and appealing city center is essential for the identification of citizens with their city and the quality of life as a whole. In this context, the creation of a city museum is a promising initiative that potentially also has economic advantages by avoiding the expensive rental accommodation of the city archive.
