Döner snack bar in Bonn closed due to disgusting hygiene issues!

The city of Bonn has recently been confronted with serious hygiene problems in the catering industry. The kebab snack bar “Mahlzeit Bonn” was recently closed by food inspectors due to extremely serious hygiene deficiencies. During the inspection on July 31, inspectors discovered blatant violations that are unacceptable for a supply point of this type. The Kölner Stadt-Anzeiger reported that, in addition to the lack of documentation about self-inspections and staff training, there were also severe space problems: Unsealed old fat was stored under the stairs and dead insects were found on the freezer and in the wall area.

In addition, the temperatures in the refrigerator room rose to an unacceptable 20 degrees, which was further supported by mold deposits on food packaging. The offensive smell that spread when the freezers were opened is equally alarming: beef was stored in meat juice with a sour smell, and the interiors of the chests were contaminated with reddish, frozen liquid. The situation was so serious that the toilets were used as a storage room for necessities and canned goods, with disposable towels also missing from the handwashing sink in the kitchen. This led to a temporary closure of the business, which was fortunately lifted five days later after the deficiencies had been rectified. However, the owner faces a fine of at least 350 euros.

Hygiene in the catering industry in focus

But the hygienic conditions in Bonn are not just an isolated problem. A comprehensive investigation by the State Office of Consumer Protection revealed that several other companies in the region have run into similar difficulties. On June 30, 2025 alone, Cafe il Barista was officially closed due to hygienic deficiencies and only reopened after a follow-up inspection. Defects were also found at the Pizzeria Bella Italia in the Duisburg area, while other businesses such as CCH Kaffee und Confiserie in Werl and Dream Catering UG in Herne also had to close.

The monitoring results at the beginning of June 2025 are particularly critical, when numerous companies were temporarily closed. When analyzing food samples, maximum levels were exceeded several times. For example, Nadi Walnut Cookies were found to contain 3825 μg/kg of fat, while the limit is only 1250 μg/kg.

Violations of food regulations

These incidents highlight the need for stricter controls and increased awareness in the catering industry. It is extremely important that restaurant owners have a good hand when it comes to hygiene in order to protect both their customers and their businesses. Anyone who slumbers here could soon be threatened with extinction. Regional authorities are required to carry out regular follow-up inspections to ensure that public health interests are protected.

A current example of the data resulting from the hygiene controls shows the worrying conditions in various companies in Cologne and the surrounding area:

Data Pursue violation status authority
July 31, 2025 Bonn meal No documentation, poor hygiene Certain deficiencies corrected City of Bonn
June 30, 2025 Cafe il Barista Hygiene deficiencies Closed City of Bonn
July 29, 2025 Pizzeria Bella Italia Hygiene deficiencies Closed City of Duisburg

The discovery of these grievances should serve as a wake-up call for all catering establishments to take their role as hosts towards their customers seriously. Protection against health risks must always be the top priority so that everyone can enjoy a carefree time in the restaurant or snack bar.
