After flood disaster: Rheinbach police station shines in new splendor!

The Rheinbach police station opened again on April 30, 2025 after intensive core renovation. The construction and property operation of the state of North Rhine-Westphalia (BLB NRW) fully restored the building after it was badly damaged during the devastating tidal disaster in July 2021. The flood events had led to the guard that lies on Grabenstraße, flooded and the basement ran with water, which destroyed essential facilities such as the house electrics and the server internal infrastructure. During the closure period, the guardians of the guard were in the neighboring police station in Meckenheim, about three kilometers away.

Numerous dignitaries were present for reopening the guard, including Interior Minister Herbert Reul, police chief Frank Hoever and the mayor of Rheinbach, Ludger Banken, and Gabriele Willems, Managing Director of the BLB NRW. The reminiscences of the challenge with which the police were confronted were emphasized. "The special history of the guard and the challenges of the flood disaster are significant," said Reul in his speech.

return to the city center

The location of the police station in the Rheinbacher Stadtmitte offers the advantage of high accessibility for citizens and the proximity to the town hall and the district court. With the return of the officials, the solutions that were introduced during the temporary closure have also been abolished. The mobile guard and the container solution were no longer needed after the regular operation returned on April 28, 2025.

In the renovated building, the building services and server rooms are now located on the attic, which increases functionality and safety. The police chief emphasized the importance of this return to the ancestral environment as a step towards normality for the administration and the community.

sustainable strategies according to the flood disaster

The flood disaster in Rhineland-Palatinate and North Rhine-Westphalia not only hit the police station enormously, but also many other areas of public life. In this context, a new guide was published to help affected municipalities create sustainable and resilient structures during reconstruction. This practical guide is entitled "After the flood disaster: Chance for Change" and is published by the German Institute for Urban Studies (DIFU). It deals with important fields of action such as reconstruction and risk assessment.

The recommendations are aimed at communities that want to prepare for future floods. The aim is to make the affected regions more climate -like and future -oriented by presenting already tried and tested strategies from other communities that have experienced similar crises in some places. This initiative shows that the reconstruction can not only be a necessity, but also an opportunity for significant improvements.
