Election campaign 2025: Candidates face the challenge in NRW!

The election campaign for the Bundestag election on February 23, 2025 has clearly recorded driving in North Rhine-Westphalia (NRW). Since the beginning of January, the political landscape has been shaped by intensive activities by top candidates. Olaf Scholz (SPD), Friedrich Merz (CDU), Robert Habeck (Greens) and Alice Weidel (AfD) are the main actors who have hung their election posters in the country's cities and are planning numerous events.

The incumbent Chancellor Olaf Scholz began his election campaign tour on January 13 in Bielefeld, Lünen and Münster. He announced a visit to Thyssenkrupp in the Ruhr area for February 4th and is also planning appearances in Cologne and Dortmund on February 21. Scholz ’approach aims to act with a clear focus on economic issues and social policy. The SPD has recorded its goals in a recently adopted election program, which includes reducing electricity costs and tax relief for the general population, as well as strengthening the defense budget.

campaign tour of the top candidates

Friedrich Merz from the CDU will start his campaign tour in Flensburg on January 20, with a later appearance on February 4 in Bonn in the World Conference Center. Merz will also visit the Rudolf-Weber-Arena in Oberhausen on February 21. The CDU clearly relies on a stricter migration policy, as the demands for a factual stop for refugees show.

Robert Habeck, the Chancellor candidate of the Greens, started his tour in Jena on January 16. He will first honor NRW on February 1 with appearances in Münster and Cologne. The Greens want to implement some of their strategic goals, such as the introduction of a climate field to relieve low and medium -sized incomes, and have anchored this in their election program to be finalized.

Alice Weidel's nomination process to the AfD candidate for Chancellor took place on 11 and 12 January. Your campaign strategy could be strongly shaped by the debate for immigration, a central topic in this election and, according to current surveys, especially in the focus of the voters.

surveys and political issues

The surveys of January 15, 2025 show the CDU with 31 percent, followed by the AfD with 20.1 percent, while the SPD is 15.9 percent and the Greens are 13.1 percent. The most important topics for voters are immigration and economy that together make up over 70 percent of the priorities. At the same time, questions about peace/foreign policy, the environment and social justice are also concerned with the interest of voters.

The political tensions within the parties are noticeable. While Scholz and his Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock are confronted with controversy to finance Ukraine aids, internal conflicts among the Greens have also caused excitement for Syrian asylum seekers. Merz and Söder, who speak for a black and yellow coalition, also look at the pressure to clearly communicate their messages. The CSU also demands an explanation of internal disputes from Habeck.

In terms of key topics, the parties have already determined their election programs. Among other things, the FDP has considered tax reforms, while the AfD centralized the topic of migration and proposes drastic measures against refugees. Social peace is also on the agenda of many candidates and is particularly discussed by the left -wing leftist.

The rapid development of the election campaign and the dynamic political conditions in North Rhine -Westphalia and all of Germany indicate that the impending elections can have profound effects on future political landscape. The next few weeks until the election will promise to give exciting insights into the strategies and positions of the parties that the voters call to the urns.
