Dortmund celebrates the construction of a mega workshop: 100 new jobs for the region!

Dortmund-Eving, Deutschland - Siemens Mobility celebrated the topping-out ceremony for a new workshop hall in Dortmund-Eving yesterday. The hall will be equipped with a total area of 12,300 square meters and is designed for the maintenance of trains with a length of up to 400 meters. The overall investment for construction amounts to around 150 million euros. The expansion of the location will extend an area extension to a total of 157,550 square meters by 2026, which increases the attractiveness of the region for potential workers. This measure is intended to create up to 100 new work and training positions in Dortmund.

Dortmund's mayor Thomas Westphal emphasized the importance of the project for work, technology and digitization. In this context, a large ICE plant from Deutsche Bahn is also built in Dortmund, the completion of which is planned for 2027 and which should offer up to 500 jobs.

digitization and innovation

The workshop in Dortmund has been in operation since 2018 and is considered one of the most modern rail service centers in Europe. The digital control of all maintenance processes enables maximum system availability of up to 100 percent. Trains that are waited in the depot continuously provide condition data via sensors that are sent to the digital platform Railigent X. This innovative technology automatically processes the collected information.

A high -speed train can generate up to 30 GB of data per month. The workshop will also house modern testing and maintenance facilities, including an outdoor cleaning system and a wheel set diagnostic system. A unique automated vehicle inspection system (AVI) will carry out the inspection of the vehicles with the help of laser technology, while in the future a fully automated visual vehicle inspection should be possible.

The complex expansion project not only includes the new workshop hall, but also storage rooms and offices that further optimize the company. From 2026, up to 250 employees in Dortmund are expected to be employed to cope with the large number of increased requirements.

In this sense, Siemens Mobility, as part of Siemens AG, plans to further expand its position in the field of mobility and service, where around 39,800 people are employed worldwide. In the 2023 financial year, Siemens Mobility generated sales of 10.5 billion euros.

Overall, the investment in Dortmund-Eving represents a significant step towards the future viability and digitization of mobility solutions, as is emphasized in several reports. The expansion of the location leads to an improvement in the quality of maintenance and efficiency while creating jobs in the region.
