AC/DC change: Mega concert now in Merkur Spiel-Arena Düsseldorf!

Düsseldorf, Deutschland - The renowned rock band AC/DC is facing an exciting appearance in Düsseldorf. On July 8, 2025, the concert, which was originally planned in the newly planned Open Air Park Düsseldorf, will now be moved to Merkur Spiel-Arena. This was announced by the organizer Mama Concerts GmbH in an official message. Tickers in particular were informed about this change at an early stage to ensure seamless access to the event. The admission to the concert will take place at 3:00 p.m., and the tickets are available from May 9, 2025 at 1 p.m. on Eventim.de

With a new album, "Power Up", which cited the charts in 21 countries, the appearance of AC/DC promises to become a highlight of the year. Fans can look forward to classics such as "Highway to Hell", "Thunderstruck" and "Back in Black". The venue was elected because the opening of the Open Air Park has not yet been secured, and the Merkur Spiel-Arena offers the location that is suitable for this occasion.

Criticism of the Open Air Park

Despite the anticipation of the AC/DC concert, there are considerable concerns about the Open Air Park in Düsseldorf. The left faction in the city council expressed its criticism for several reasons. A central point is the economic feasibility of the project. The park would have to generate over one million euros annually through rental income, which many consider unrealistic. In addition, no need for another mega event area in North Rhine-Westphalia is seen.

traffic and noise pollution are further unresolved problems that are under discussion. Sigrid Lehmann, a member of the Left Council, emphasizes the negative ecological balance of the project. A large event with 80,000 visitors could cause up to 597 tons of greenhouse gases without a compensation for the environment. According to the Climate Protection Act in Germany, 65 % of CO2 emissions must be saved by 2030 in order to become completely climate-neutral by 2045.

The left faction plans to vote in the city council against the statutes of the Open Air Park. D.Live, the operator of the project, records on the plan despite the critical voices, but does not want to comment on the allegations, since the coordination in the city council on May 28 is imminent. Düsseldorf strives to become climate -neutral by 2035, which was decided by the city council in 2019.

sustainability in the event industry

The topic of sustainability is also becoming increasingly important in the music and event industry. Many organizers and artists now include climate and environmental aspects in their planning. For example, the band Radiohead shows what a sustainable implementation of concerts can look like: they rent local sound and lighting systems to reduce transport emissions and choose venues with good access to public transport.

The journey is one of the greatest ecological footprints at concerts. Some festivals integrate a ticket offer that includes arrival by public transport. An example of this is the Open Air St. Gallen in Switzerland, which offers visitors for arrival by train. Nevertheless, the way to complete sustainability remains a challenge, since the degree of implementation in the industry often remains behind the goals. Sustainability experts emphasize the need for a large rethink within the industry.
