Myth of Murano: Shining glass and centuries-old craftsmanship in Düsseldorf

Brightly colored glass art and centuries-old craftsmanship come together in the new exhibition “Myth of Murano”, currently in the Art Palace in Düsseldorf can be seen. With 135 fascinating works, the show offers an impressive insight into the tradition of Murano glass, from vases to candlesticks to the most modern experiments.

The glass art of Murano, a small island in Venice, has a long and storied past. The first glass workshops began here in the Middle Ages in order to carry out dangerous glassmaking away from the danger of fire in the city. Because of this security, glassmaking was restricted to the island in 1291, laying the foundation for the famous techniques such as filigree and millefiori. Tourists attach great importance to original Murano glasses that bear the “Vetri di Murano” seal and are therefore guaranteed to be authentic.

A look at the exhibits

The “Myth of Murano” exhibition is not only the first in a series of annually changing themes, but also awaits visitors with an impressive variety. The 135 exhibits of lesser-known but also highly valued glass works include the colorful masterpieces of artists such as Luciano Gaspari and Alessandro Pianon. The latter brings more than just color into play with his “Orange Chick” from the early 60s. Also newer designs, such as the playful glass objects from Sunnei S.r.l., which reinterpret the topic of glass in innovative ways, are part of this exhibition that is well worth seeing.

The glassblowing techniques developed in Murano are particularly impressive. The well-known one Italian collectors highlights that glassblowers in the 13th century worked under strict conditions: anyone who tried to leave Murano risked not only their freedom, but also that of their family. Nevertheless, glass art flourished and the city of Venice developed into a central trading center for glassware in the 17th century. With many famous glass factories such as Venini and Salviati, glass art experienced a new heyday in the first half of the 20th century, which is now celebrated in exhibitions.

From tradition to modernity

Glass production in Murano is full of surprises. The 1970s saw an increase in the production of souvenirs for tourists - from tiny animal figurines to glowing chandeliers. The innovation is impressive and speaks to the creative potential of the region. Modern designers also find inspiration in traditional techniques that are nevertheless rooted in their tradition. The show in the art palace not only shows the masterpieces of Murano glass art from the 1920s to 1970s, but also shows how the ancient art continues to be reinterpreted.

The exhibition “Myth of Murano” is not only a real eye-catcher, but also a must-see for all art lovers and those who have a good knack for exceptional craftsmanship. It not only says something about the beauty of the glass, but also about the cultural history of an entire region. See you soon at the Kunstpalast!
