Trump and Xi Jinping: TikTok deal brings hope in the USA!

Today, September 19, 2025, a possible deal for the popular video app TikTok is causing excitement in the USA and beyond. Chinese President Xi Jinping has agreed to a deal that could secure the future of the app in the United States, according to Donald Trump. While the exact details of the deal are still vague, Trump remains optimistic and explains that investors are already working in the background on preparations. The US government is talking about an agreement in principle on the future of TikTok, which should address concerns about Chinese influence on the app.

Trump reiterated that the deal ensures there will be no Chinese government influence on TikTok. American investors, including well-known companies such as Oracle, Silver Lake and Andreessen Horowitz, are to take over TikTok's US business. This group could take control of around 80 percent of a new US subsidiary of TikTok. The Wall Street Journal reports that investors are expected to pay billions of dollars.

A checkered story

The story of TikTok in the US has been a truly wild ride over the last five years. There were initial attempts to ban the app at the beginning of the Trump presidency, supported by cross-party voices in Congress. Concerns have often focused on privacy and the influence of ByteDance, TikTok's parent company, on American users. Above all, the concern that TikTok is being used by the Chinese government to spy on users has repeatedly caused a stir.

President Biden continued the review initially initiated by Trump and signed legislation that set a deadline for ByteDance to sell the app. According to US law, ByteDance would have had to sell by January 19, 2025 or take the app offline in the US. However, Trump issued deadline extensions several times without any legal basis, changing his stance on the app as part of his 2024 presidential election campaign and eventually becoming a TikTok user himself.

The challenges for TikTok

Despite the current developments, TikTok is still under pressure. The US Supreme Court has upheld a law requiring ByteDance to sell the app to an owner outside of China - and the deadline to do so is tomorrow. TikTok has more than 170 million users in the U.S. and discussion surrounding the potential sale and related national security concerns remains intense.

In this context, TikTok plans to develop a new app for US users that ensures that their data is stored within the USA. This could address concerns about data protection and government-related surveillance. Even after these efforts, some distrust among lawmakers remains, particularly after reports of unlawful access to data from US journalists, further fueling debate over the deal.

So the situation remains exciting. It remains to be seen whether the negotiations for the deal will actually be concluded in time and what this could mean for users in the USA and for the entire platform.
