Telekom presents AI Phone: Smartphone revolution without apps!

A new star in the smartphone sky is making itself felt: Deutsche Telekom today presented the AI Phone, a device that dares to use an innovative strategy and stands out from conventional smartphones. Instead of the usual app interface, users initially see a magenta-colored screen display in which common applications can only be made visible by swiping. This fresh approach could revolutionize the way we interact with technology. Radio Euskirchen emphasizes that Perplexity's AI-powered voice assistant is the heart of this new smartphone. Users can ask simple questions and the assistant provides helpful answers, be it in the form of shopping suggestions or translations.

With a price of 149 euros, Telekom offers an attractive package that is significantly cheaper than many competing products. The AI phone is expected to come onto the market in 2025 and is a further development of the existing T-phone, produced in Vietnam. While Telekom has not published any sales figures for the previous model, the hope remains that the new device will be better received by customers.

Intuitive features and strategic partnerships

The AI phone offers numerous functions: from ordering a taxi and reserving a table to real-time translations and the creation of calendar entries. According to Telekom, the digital assistant is conveniently activated via the lock screen or by double-tapping the power button. These functionalities could significantly improve the user experience and pave the way for more efficient communication.

Another advantage of the AI Phone is the integration of partners such as Google Cloud AI, ElevenLabs and Picsart, which provide additional AI features. Google Cloud AI enables, among other things, real-time translation and improves video understanding. This shows how much AI can change the smartphone experience, no longer just using external servers, but rather the intelligence is embedded directly in the device. Deloitte reports that over 30 percent of smartphones shipped worldwide will be AI-enabled by the end of 2025, showing that this trend is gaining traction across the board.

Telekom has recognized the challenge that many consumers are afraid of artificial intelligence. A YouGov survey found that only 15 percent of Germans have had experience with AI chatbots. Nevertheless, a growing number of users show that they appreciate the potential of AI in new devices. Support for AI functions is particularly high among the younger generation and middle-aged groups - more than half of those surveyed express the desire for locally supported AI applications.

The competition never sleeps

But Telekom is not alone on the market. Other mobile phone providers such as Vodafone, O2 and 1&1 are increasingly relying on partnerships with established manufacturers instead of developing their own smartphones. Vodafone uses smartphones and operating systems from Google and Microsoft, while O2 focuses on developing AI skills in the mobile network.

Overall, Telekom is bringing a breath of fresh air into the industry with its AI phone. If she can implement her ideas well and convince users of the benefits of AI, this step could usher in a new era of smartphone use. And who knows, maybe we'll soon find out that the device is more than just a simple everyday companion!
