Heavenue Cologne: Colorful Christmas market returns with glitter in 2025!
The queer Christmas market Heavenue in Cologne, which has had to take a break in recent years, will return with new vigor in 2025. After three years of absence from Cologne's festival grounds, the organizers led by Thomas Fasshauer are looking forward to the return of one of the city's most colorful Christmas markets. What makes Heavenue so special? The motto is: "Flamingos instead of reindeer. Glitter instead of kitsch". A creative approach that aims to create a colorful atmosphere with impressive shows, trendy drinks, delicious street food and unique gift ideas. Opening times are Monday to Thursday from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m., Friday and Saturday from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. An exception is Dead Sunday, when the market remains closed.
The past and the return of Heavenue
Heavenue has enjoyed great popularity since its first edition in 2018. It originally took place at Rudolfplatz until the location had to move due to space availability and construction work that made the old location unusable. Thomas Fasshauer explained the cancellation for 2023 with the structural changes to the Sparkasse branch nearby. This made many Cologne residents sorely miss the popular Christmas market, and the need for its return was loudly expressed, as some posts on social media show. ksta.de has reported extensively on the positive reactions to the idea of moving to Friesenplatz.
Friesenplatz is classified as a promising location because, on the one hand, it is large enough for the flow of visitors and, on the other hand, it offers a central location to create a connection between the Christmas markets on Rudolfplatz and the Stadtgarten. The anticipation of a colorful, glittering event is palpable among Cologne residents, and the organizers are also optimistic.
A look into the future
A public tender for events on Friesenplatz is already planned for next year. This will take place at the beginning of 2025. Although the city, for reasons of neutrality, cannot make a definitive statement as to whether Heavenue will be one of the desired events on the square, Fasshauer reiterates the desire to bring the market back to life and remains confident about the negotiations.
The return of Heavenue is not only a sign that the times of the Corona break are over, but also a sign of hope and community for many gays and lesbians in Cologne.
