Bomb discovered in the Almeepark: 50 affected people have to evacuate!

In the Almepark industrial area in Paderborn, an American 50-kilo bomb was recently discovered during earthworks. This dangerous development led to comprehensive evacuation measures because the bomb was in a depth of four meters in the ground. The defusing of the bomb is planned for Tuesday evening at 7 p.m. A blocking radius of 200 meters around the site has been set up, which means that around 50 residents from the areas in Lohfeld and Dietrich-Bonhoeffer-Straße have to leave their apartments. The Diebold Nixdorf employees are also affected by this measure.

For the residents concerned, alternative residence locations were organized in the Johannes community center, in the youth club as well as at the daycare center and the sports field at the Goerdeler-Gymnasium. The cafeteria of the Goerdeler-Gymnasium is used as a residence option for the evacuated. Some traffic measures are also in force, since the Street Heinz-Nixdorf-Ring between Elsener Straße and branch Riemekestraße is closed. Bus lines 8, 10 and 20 of the Pader sprinter will be redirected from 6.30 p.m., and the additional information on the effects on public transport are available on the website of the paper sprinter.

last bomb defusing and historical contexts

The last bombing in Paderborn took place in September when a 500 kilogram bomb was discovered. Such finds are not exceptional in the region, since ammunition from the Second World War often comes to light. On Sunday morning, a 500-kilogram American aviation bomb was also defused in downtown Paderborn. This bomb was discovered during construction work in the Paderwiesen and required the evacuation of over 3,000 residents within a radius of 500 meters. In this case, a hospital and the St. Johannstift retirement home also had to be evacuated, which also made the logistics of defusing complicated.

Experience with bomb defuses shows that such measures are often associated with major challenges. In Dresden, for example, thousands of people are waiting for the defusing of a British flying bomb that was also discovered there during construction work. Up to 10,000 people are affected there, since public buildings such as the Saxon State Chancellery and numerous museums also had to be cleared. In addition to the technical implementation, the defusing of ammunition from the Second World War also requires precise planning and coordination of evacuations.
