UVR Berlin is fighting for the future: Can the label be saved?
The small, warmly illuminated clothing store in Kreuzberger Bergmannstrasse, UVR Berlin, is standing a decisive week ago. Despite the inviting atmosphere and the lively customers, there is great uncertainty behind the scenes. In the shop window and next to the changing rooms, there are striking posters with the "SOS" message. The sustainable fashion label had to file for bankruptcy almost 14 months ago, and the question of whether UVR can remain. A loan from pandemic times over more than half a million euros, increasing energy costs due to the Ukraine war and a reserved willingness to buy the company have brought the company into this critical situation. The invoices have remained and the existence of UVR is threatened. Berliner Zeitung reports that the bankruptcy does not want to use the situation as an opportunity.
The team around the managing director Anna Schieber, who has been part of the company for over twelve years, has made hard decisions. Two branches were closed and an investor seemed in sight. But at the end of November 2024 the shock came: the investor withdrew for personal reasons. "At first I was in absolute shock and thought it is over now," recalls Schieber. But instead of giving up, the team started working intensively on solutions. A large social media campaign with the hashtag "#unzichtbar" and a Gofundme campaign was created to collect urgently needed 450,000 euros to save UVR. By January 10, 2025, almost 10,000 euros could be collected in donations.
responsibility and the way forward
The initiatives showed first successes: In January 2025, UVR had talks with six potential investors. "We found people over the shops, about the press, about Instagram," reports Schieber hopefully. The long -term career of UVR Berlin began more than 30 years ago in Kreuzberg, where the company began selling self -sewn trousers. Today, Uvrdesigns that are designed for normal consumers who like an individual note offers. The designs are created in Berlin, production takes place in Poland, Bulgaria, Portugal and Greece. uvr berlin relies on sustainable production methods, whereby preferably recycled wool, organic cotton and the natural fiber tencel are used.
For slide, the rescue of UVR is more than just a business responsibility; It is also a personal concern. "I just can't imagine that a company that has survived for 30 years perishes through external influences," she says. With an optimistic belief in the future existence of UVR, the company plans to establish itself as a sustainable brand. The goal is to offer your own products in your own business instead of external brands.
an outlook in the future
by mid -January 2025, new financing must be secured. Although the first preliminary commitments from investors are available, the financial situation remains tense. The exact sum that UVR may have to raise itself is still unknown. In the critical situation, it could also be necessary to release parts of the company to save other areas. Sleber remains optimistic: "Of course it would be cool if a few more people call and say, 'We want to give you money'." But even if the company should ultimately fail, Schieber and her team have prepared to have exhausted all the options. "It's a good feeling," she says.
Information on the opening times of UVR Berlin are also important: the shops are open from Monday to Friday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. and 2.30 p.m. to 7 p.m. and on Saturday from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. The main location is located in Bergmannstrasse 2, with other branches in Friedrichshain and Schöneberg.
