Tragic end at the Christmas concert: man dies in Krefeld!

On December 5, 2025, a tragic incident occurred in the Friedenskirche in Krefeld that overshadowed Kathy Kelly's (62) planned Christmas concert. At around 7:30 p.m., a man in the audience collapsed, shocking the approximately 400 guests present. Immediate action was taken as doctors who happened to be in the audience administered first aid and emergency services were called. Despite intensive attempts at resuscitation, which lasted almost an hour, the man could no longer be helped and he died on site. A fire department spokesman confirmed the sad news and explained that the man could no longer be saved. Kathy Kelly herself found out about this incident in her dressing room and was visibly shaken.

In view of the dramatic circumstances, the artist decided to cancel the concert at short notice. Her agent, Georg Knaupe from Göttlich Entertainment, expressed his condolences to the deceased man's relatives. Kelly said in her Instagram story that it was unimaginable for her to present a happy Christmas program while someone had died. Given the emotional strain, she is seeking to cancel the performance. An alternative date has been agreed for December 13th and all tickets already purchased remain valid. Alternatively, ticket holders have the option of going to the Luther Church in Solingen on Sunday evening.

Preparing for the unexpected

The events in Krefeld shed light on the importance of security precautions at events. The BaSiGo project, which was developed between 2012 and 2015 as part of a research program, could represent a valuable resource here. The project, funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research, aims to help organizers and authorities plan and carry out major events safely. The focus is on simulating arrival and departure traffic as well as pedestrian movements in order to identify and minimize potential safety risks at an early stage. A comprehensive guide makes planning easier, but BaSiGo has so far only gained a limited foothold.

The tragic events at Kathy Kelly's concert not only shook up the evening for those in attendance, but also highlighted the need for security measures at events. At a time when the events industry is picking up again, it remains crucial that both organizers and security guards have clear procedures in place to ensure the safety of guests.
