Crime in Berlin and Brandenburg: Men dominate convictions!
Convictions and crime statistics often leave a lasting impression on the public. At the moment it is primarily the numbers from Berlin and Brandenburg that are causing a lot of conversation. Around 80 percent of those convicted in these two federal states are men, a trend that has remained stable in recent years. The most common crimes in Berlin are theft and embezzlement, which account for 21.4 percent of all convictions. These figures were supported by the Police Crime Statistics (PKS), which also shows that the number of recorded theft offenses accounts for around a third of all crimes. In Brandenburg, however, traffic offenses lead the statistics at 33.1 percent.
A look at criminal records
A frightening aspect of the current statistics is that almost half of those convicted had previously committed a crime. In Berlin, 12,507 people (46.7 percent) had a criminal record. This is a considerable proportion, which unfortunately supports the assumption that many delinquents are repeat offenders. In Brandenburg, this figure was 45.2 percent with 7,530 people convicted.
These numbers also cast a shadow on the general crime situation in Germany. A look at the PKS shows that the total number of crimes recorded fell by 1.7 percent to 5.837 million cases in 2024. The clearance rate is 58.0 percent, but violent crimes have increased by 1.5 percent to 217,277 cases - the highest level since 2007. Particularly worrying is the increase in sexual crimes, which have increased by 9.3 percent to 13,320 cases.
The role of the genders
As far as the gender distribution of convicts is concerned, the Federal Statistical Office identified a clear trend in an evaluation from 2013 to 2023: Male convicts dominate the statistics. These developments can also be observed in the current figures for 2024. The increase in violent crimes is particularly striking, which is largely attributed to an increase in non-German suspects. With 85,012 cases (+7.5%) and increasing numbers of young perpetrators, there is an urgent need for action. It is all the more important that politics and society work together to develop solutions to ensure safety for everyone.
In view of these developments, one could almost believe that society is in a kind of constant battle against crime. It remains to be seen how those responsible can turn things around so that the numbers don't continue to rise. A good start would certainly be an intensive dialogue about behavioral changes - both in society and among individuals who have committed crimes.
