Florian Wirtz has turned his back on Leverkusen and is moving to Liverpool FC. In an emotional video recorded from the BayArena, the talented midfielder said goodbye to the fans and thanked them for the "great time" and the "love" shown to him. The farewell came as a surprise to many, as his move had not yet been confirmed after the last matchday of last season, which further heated up the mood.

Wirtz, who began his career in Leverkusen five and a half years ago as a 16-year-old, looked back on many ups and some downs in the video. The torn cruciate ligament in March 2022 was particularly painful and is considered the biggest setback of his career to date. Nevertheless, he was also able to celebrate one of his greatest successes: the undefeated championship in the 2023/24 season, which Wirtz described as the best moment of his time at Bayer.

The Road to Liverpool

Negotiations between Liverpool and Bayer Leverkusen dragged on for three weeks and were finally concluded on June 20, 2025. The clubs agreed an initial fee of $134 million, supplemented by an additional $21 million in potential bonuses, bringing the total value of the transfer up to $156 million (£116 million). Wirtz had the opportunity to move to other big clubs such as Bayern Munich, but chose Liverpool, where he has already started training at the AXA Training Center this week.

In his video, he not only expressed his connection to Leverkusen, but also remembered his beginnings, his debut and his emotional moments on the pitch. A particularly memorable moment was his hat-trick against Bremen, which was wildly celebrated by the fans. Wirtz promised to return as a guest in the future to personally say goodbye to the fans.
