New flood app: This is how your home protects against flooding!

This day, April 25, 2025, a new digital solution to improve flood protection in North Rhine-Westphalia will be presented. The website www.hochwasser-App.nrw has been activated and offers citizens in the Mettmann district the opportunity to check their places for dangers from heavy rain and flood. This innovative flood risk app enables an individual risk analysis for each address in the circle. Here, users not only have risk cards, but also detailed information on endangered areas, especially in Ratingen-West and Hilden along the Itter, such as [radioneandertal.de].

In addition to the app, the citizens can benefit from the variety of information, which is provided by publicly accessible data via heavy rain note cards and flood hazard cards. Various scenarios are played through these to develop a better understanding of the dangers. The danger assessment takes place by a traffic light system, which can also be downloaded as a PDF. This project is supported by the Ministry of Homeland, Local, Construction and Digitization with around 300,000 euros, which underlines the need and urgency of the flood risk management.

Extended information on flood risk management

flood risk management is a complex topic that must be addressed at different levels. Complete protection against floods is not possible, so comprehensive measures are necessary to minimize the risks. This includes preventive steps such as area prevention and technical measures, as well as early warning systems and post -preparation plans. A 10-point work plan in North Rhine-Westphalia addresses these aspects, especially with regard to climate change and the associated risks for existing infrastructures.

The flood in front of the flood and the continuous exchange between the affected actors such as water management, weather services and disaster protection are crucial for success. Flood events, such as those in July 2021, clearly showed the reform needs in flood prevention. The amendment to the Water Household Act and the EU flood risk management directive support a coordinated approach to minimizing flood sequences by prescribing the creation of risk cards.

Mettmanner Tafel and Ratinger Naturbühne

While the digital solution gains popularity for danger evaluation, the Mettmann Tafel faces an urgent challenge. The facility must move out of its old parish hall in Metzkausen by the end of the year, which served as a temporary solution for seven years. The city of Mettmann offers support, but a quick solution has not yet been in sight. The requirements for the new accommodation are high: it should be at least 300 square meters, offer a large outdoor area and parking spaces for transport cars.

The Ratinger Naturbühne is preparing for the coming season at the same time. This was badly affected two years ago by flooding. The first performances were canceled early in 2022. Thanks to donations, renovations and favorable lease conditions, a restart could be made possible. The season begins on June 8th with the family theater piece "The Jungle Book", while the rehearsals start in the coming weeks.

sustainable mobility in the district of Mettmann

Another important event in the district of Mettmann is the city cycling that starts on June 1st. In this context, citizens are called to cover as many routes as possible by bike. In the previous year, almost 7,000 people took part in the campaign and were able to save over 200 tons of CO2 compared to the drive. This commitment to sustainable mobility also contributes to reducing environmental pollution and supplements the measures to reduce risk in the field of flood protection.
