In the night from Monday to Tuesday, the Mönchengladbach police were made aware of a burglary in a cigarette machine on Brückenstrasse by an attentive witness. The emergency services arrived at around 0:30 a.m. and found that the machine's hinge had been severed. A striking metal smell indicated that the crime was fresh.

Near the crime scene, the officials discovered a suspicious vehicle with four inmates. During a search, they not only found an angle grinder, but also two license plates that did not belong to the vehicle. The police recorded the investigation into suspected markers and attempted particularly heavy theft from the cigarette machine.
