Spooky fun for the whole family: Halloween in the Rhine-Ruhr Center!

A spooky Halloween is just around the corner! On October 31st it's that time again: families and children in Cologne can look forward to a colorful and spooky program. Because that Halloween program in the Rhine-Ruhr Center flexed from 12 p.m. with all sorts of activities that will be great fun for the little ghosts and their companions.

From 12 p.m. to 6 p.m., children are invited to make creative jute bags at a craft station and have their makeup painted with spooky motifs. In addition, the Rhine-Ruhr Center will be decorated with Halloween decorations from October 27th, which will increase the anticipation of the festival. Sweet surprises await in many shops, while pumpkin stickers on shop windows signal: “Trick instead of treating”!

Origins and Traditions of Halloween

But where does this custom actually come from? Halloween, short for “All Hallows’ Eve,” is derived from the evening before All Saints’ Day, which has been celebrated since November 1, 835. The roots of the festival lie in both Celtic and Christian traditions. Especially the Celtic festival Samhain plays an important role as it marks the transition from harvest season to winter.

Originally from Ireland, Halloween came to the USA in the 19th century with Irish emigrants and returned to Europe thanks to US soldiers and the famous scary film series “Halloween”. In Cologne, children are also enthusiastic about this tradition and go from house to house to ask for trick-or-treating.

The Eifelpark Gondorf also holds Hallownights, while the Alte Dombach in Bergisch Gladbach offers workshops and flashlight tours.

On October 31st, the “HalloFeen!” festival will also take place in Cologne’s Südstadt. instead, inspired by the old Celtic custom. For creative minds, the Max Ernst Museum in Brühl is offering a mask-making workshop on October 25th, which is also very popular.

Halloween has become more and more popular in Germany in recent years. In 2023, around 480 million euros were invested in Halloween items, with spending on decorations, costumes and make-up being very popular. In 2019 this amount was 320 million euros, which shows that interest in this gruesome festival is constantly growing.
