New Schloßberg playground: Construction work for inclusion starts now!

There is great anticipation for the new inclusive playground at Schloßberg in Mülheim. From today, September 24, 2025, construction work will begin, starting with surveying work radiomuelheim.de reported. The transformation of the green area into a playground for everyone is part of the preparation for the International Garden Exhibition (IGA) 2027 and will promote diversity and inclusion.

The city of Mülheim has set itself the goal of creating a playground that enables children with and without disabilities to play together. Particularly practical will be a central design idea that ensures that wheelchair users can easily access higher levels within the main play structure. Mülheim an der Ruhr highlights that children with special needs as well as all other children will benefit from a wide range of play equipment.

Planning and financing

The total costs for this inclusive playground amount to around 1.5 million euros, with a pleasing 80 percent covered by funding. The “Rolli-Rockers-Sprösslingen” association supports the project through donations and has thus made an important contribution to the realization of this idea. Thanks to this support, not only can new play equipment be purchased, but an environment is also created in which all children can feel comfortable and play.

“Inclusive playgrounds are important for playing together and accepting differences at an early stage,” emphasizes Dr. Volker Anneken from the Research Institute for Inclusion through Exercise and Sport (FIBS). The initiatives of Human Action aim to create more accessibility and thus promote the development of children with disabilities.

What's next?

Actual construction work on the playground is expected to begin early next year. However, some preparation must be made beforehand to ensure that the construction process goes smoothly. During the work, two main road connections will always remain passable so that accessibility is not lost. Short-term closures of the path at the bottleneck to the bridge over Bergstrasse will be announced in good time.

With this project, the city of Mülheim is taking a clear inclusive approach to getting all children to enjoy the benefits of playing outside. This initiative is not only a step towards accessibility, but also an opportunity to strengthen the community and promote coexistence for all children.
