Salon des Refusés: Experience art against the tide in Mülheim!

The Salon des Refusés opened its doors on Sunday, June 15, 2025, in the Villa Artis in Mülheim an der Ruhr and unleashed a true artistic fireworks display. The exhibition has the theme “Other Art” and aims to present works that are beyond the mainstream, rejected and often considered uncomfortable. Already at the opening there was an overwhelming rush, which thrilled the exhibitors. The presentation covers more than 1,200 square meters and showcases a variety of art forms, from paintings to sculptures to installations and printing techniques.

Particularly noteworthy is the reading by a contemporary witness with Sicilian roots, whose migration story offers deep insights into the topics of diversity and identity. An important goal of the event is to create a platform for critical and often forgotten positions in art. The concept of showing artists and their works that are less in focus benefits many visitors who are looking for authentic and touching works of art. For the first time there is also the opportunity to purchase some of these works of art, which makes the whole thing even more exciting.

One-off charity auction

Another highlight of the event will be the large charity art auction on July 6, 2025. From 4 p.m., art lovers can auction originals from various collections at affordable prices. The proceeds from this auction go entirely to the “Wünschewagen” project, which is dedicated to fulfilling the last wishes of seriously ill people. This combination of art and social commitment ensures an all-round successful experience for everyone involved and shows that art can not only have an aesthetic effect, but also a human one.

Art and diversity

At a time when the discourse on diversity and inclusion is one of the most pressing questions in society, the Salon des Refusés is an important signal. Critics like Ersan Mondtag warn that established cultural institutions should engage much more with the diverse society. There are still many hurdles that need to be overcome, as Tunay Önder also emphasizes. Projects like this salon could help bridge the gap and include more people with a migrant background in the art scene. It is crucial that cultural workers and institutions actively help shape this change.

The exhibition in the Salon des Refusés opens its doors until July 8, 2025. Admission is free; a wonderful opportunity for art enthusiasts to be inspired and at the same time contribute to a good cause.
