Thriller premiere in the Astra: When autumn approaches, the audience is gripped
On Wednesday, August 27, 2025, a special film preview was celebrated at the Astra Theater: the latest film by French director François Ozon, “When Autumn Approaches” (original title: “Quand vient l’automne”). This gripping thriller, which premiered in September 2024 at the San Sebastian International Film Festival, not only promises exciting twists and turns, but also sheds light on the complex relationships within a family.
The plot revolves around the protagonist Michelle, a retired woman who lives in a picturesque village in Burgundy. At her side is her long-time friend Marie-Claude, who has to support her through a dramatic situation. A fateful contact between Michelle and her daughter Valérie ends in chaos: Michelle accidentally serves poisonous mushrooms, which leads to a deep conflict. Valérie believes that her mother wanted to kill her on purpose, causing a painful rift in the family. Her grandson Lucas is kept out of this connection, and Michelle sinks into a deep depression. But then something unexpected happens: Marie-Claude's son is released from prison and offers her old friend support. In this drama, Ozon impressively combines interpersonal conflicts with comedic elements, which are only enhanced thanks to the acting performances of Hélène Vincent and Josiane Balasko.
A director with sensitivity
François Ozon, born on November 15, 1967 in Paris, has established himself as one of France's most important directors since his breakthrough with “Views of the Sea” (1997). His best-known works include hits such as “8 Women” (2002) and “Swimming Pool” (2003). In his most recent work, “When Autumn Approaches,” Ozon not only addresses growing older, but also toxic mother-daughter relationships, which he sees as a central motif in his films. The story is based on Ozon's personal memories, which include a tragic incident from his childhood when his great-aunt poisoned the family while picking mushrooms. Ozon himself has stated that he does not think about the autumn of life, but remains optimistic when it comes to enjoying life and work in old age.
France's film industry in focus
France has a long-standing tradition and strong political priorities when it comes to protecting and promoting its culture in film. This is a central player in this value system CNC, the Center national du cinéma et de l'image animée, founded in 1946, which protects French film heritage and actively supports the film industry. Compared to Germany, which invests around 250 million euros in film funding, around 750 million euros flow into the French cinema industry every year. A special cultural tax on cinema ticket sales also contributes to this, with part of the proceeds being used directly to promote films.
Film productions are particularly popular in France and attract around 60 million foreign viewers every year. Over 200 film festivals take place every year, including the renowned festival in Cannes. At the same time, French films, which account for around 35-45% of cinema admissions, account for a significant share of the annual cinema summer. This speaks for a strong national cinema identity that also represents French culture internationally.
With “When Autumn Approaches,” Ozon not only brings a moving film to the screen, but also sets an example for the creative freedom that his native France offers him. A fact that Ozon consciously appreciates, as he has rejected numerous offers from Hollywood. In this way he remains true to the artistic roots and the special flair of French cinema.
