VSG Mülheim celebrates 70 years: sport and health for everyone!
On June 22, 2025, the Mülheim Association for Sport and Health (VSG Mülheim) will look back on a proud 70 years. Founded in the “Handelshof” hotel as the disabled sports community in Mülheim, the club has developed over the years into an important contact point for sport and health. The successes and development of the association will be celebrated at an anniversary celebration that will take place on July 5th in an allotment garden. The current slogan “We move people!” reflects the club's philosophy, which focuses on exercise, health and social interaction. LocalCompass reports that the club currently has 239 members, including 66 rehabilitation athletes without membership cards. A team of eight trainers and six doctors ensure comprehensive care for the athletes.
The roots of the association go back deep into the history of the post-war period, when initially only war and accident-damaged members were active. Typical sports of the time were football tennis, sitting ball, table tennis and bosseln. A significant milestone was the founding of the first cardiac sports group in 1980, which took care of the prevention and aftercare of people with heart disease. The relevance of cardiac sports in club offerings is constantly growing because more and more people are recognizing how important exercise is for heart health.
Wide range of sports for everyone
The club's range of sports has expanded enormously over the decades. Today it includes not only coronary sports and volleyball, but also swimming, table tennis, strength training, qigong and special programs for stroke patients. Sports therapy Paderborn describes how important integrative sports groups are and emphasizes that the VSG Mülheim has constantly expanded its offerings through new establishments and collaboration with other sports groups. Today's sports also include equipment training and obesity sports that meet special needs.
Particularly interesting is the club's heart group, which according to the Heart Foundation is suitable for people who want to strengthen their heart through sport. These groups, which have a maximum of 20 members, work efficiently under medical supervision. Participants train once a week to promote the joy of exercise while strengthening their hearts. People with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease or high blood pressure are also welcome here. The development of such cardiac sports groups shows how important prevention and aftercare are and how sport can help to regain quality of life.
The history of VSG Mülheim is an impressive example of how sports clubs can develop over the years. From its modest beginning in the “Handelshof” hotel to a modern club that offers a variety of sports and health-promoting measures, the club's career is a success story that has inspired and lastingly influenced a large number of people.
