New Cathedral Museum in Münster: Topping-out ceremony is approaching for the historic new building!
Something is happening in Münster! The new cathedral museum “Paulus” is being built in the heart of the historic old town, directly opposite the impressive town and market church of St. Lamberti. Construction work on this important project began a year ago and the topping-out ceremony for the new building is scheduled for November 11th. The entire area around the Alter Steinweg will not only be upgraded, but will also set a new cultural accent. [ Church and Life ] reports that the building is being built by the Lohmann family of investors and that the work is on schedule.
At the presentation on September 29, 2023, Cathedral Provost Hans-Bernd Köppen gave insights into the progress and the vision behind the exhibition venue, which will succeed the old cathedral chamber. This had to close in 2017 due to structural defects, particularly defective air conditioning technology. The new museum will be housed in rented premises, with the new exhibition space covering around 400 square meters. Previous exhibitions in the old cathedral chamber had an area of 750 square meters. The planners, Jörg Preckel from “P / E / P Architekten + Stadtplaner GmbH”, specifically pursue a concept in which the exhibitions are regularly changed according to theme in order to create a lively connection to city life. This highlights the cultural significance of the museum and promises to actively engage visitors. [ Paul's Church ]
Funding and vision
Another important issue is the financing of the free museum. The cathedral chapter plans to cover half of the costs through church tax funds and the other half through foundation funds. This not only shows the commitment of the parish, but also the broad support from the community.
After opening in summer 2026, the city expects a new highlight that will not only attract tourists, but can also function as an educational institution with lively exchange in the region. As part of sustainable urban development, which also has a high priority in current larger construction projects, the city of Münster shows that it has a good knack for targeted and future-oriented cultural and urban development. A coveted goal is therefore in sight: The “Paulus” Cathedral Museum will not only create a new cultural space, but will also play a key role in the context of major urban development projects in Münster. It remains to be seen what other surprises the construction phase has in store! We will of course keep you up to date.
