New innovation center in Neuss: The future of the food industry!
in the Rhenish area, the “Launchcenter Food” project is based on an important project for the food industry. This center is intended to create an innovation core that focuses on the sustainable use of plant raw materials and alternative proteins. According to Land.nrw , the region offers its strong processing business, especially for sugar beet, potatoes, vegetables and cereals, optimal conditions for environmentally friendly food production.
On Monday, January 20, 2025, Minister of Agriculture Silke Gorißen will hand over two funding notices with a total value of 5.88 million euros. These funding go to the project partners Rhein-Kreis Neuss and Niederrhein University of Applied Sciences. The “Launchcenter Food” will be based in Neuss, where it should help to use resources more efficiently and to develop marketable food products.
Sustainable protein sources in focus
The EU Horizon 2020 program with the name "Smart Protein" with the participation of the Fraunhofer IVV runs in parallel to this regional project. As ivv.fraunhofer.de reports, the main goal of the project is the development of sustainable and alternative protein sources. This initiative is a reaction to the challenges of climate change and the need to secure global nutrition. The research team examines various protein sources such as plants, fungi and by -products from the food industry. The first products that are to be launched in 2025 include vegetable replacement products for meat, fish, cheese and dairy products. A particularly innovative aspect of the project is the use of by -products that have traditionally been used as animal feed to win high -quality microbial proteins.
Germany as a pioneer in the area of plant -based foods
Germany has played a pioneering role in plant -based foods in recent years. According to gfieurope.org it is the largest market for plant-based products in Europe. In 2022, sales in this segment rose to 1.9 billion euros, which corresponds to an increase of 11 % compared to the previous year. The categories of plant -based meat and herbal milk grew particularly strongly, with sales of 643 million euros or 552 million euros in 2022.
The demand for alternative proteins is also evident in the high willingness of consumers. 57 % of Germans would buy cultivated meat if it were available. Among the younger ones, especially among 25 year olds, even 82 % support the purchase of cultivated meat. This illustrates a growing interest in sustainable and ethical nutritional options.
summarized it is shown that both the "Launchcenter Food" and the "Smart Protein" project are important steps into the future of sustainable nutrition. With innovative approaches and the focus on herbal proteins, you could make a decisive contribution to securing an environmentally friendly and healthy food supply.
