Becketal Cup: Taekwondo spectacle with a world record and new talent!
On June 15, 2025, the Gummersbach Eugen-Haas-Halle was once again the scene of an exciting sporting event: TV Becketal hosted the eleventh edition of the renowned “Becketal Cup” taekwondo tournament. With around 230 athletes, the number of participants was significantly lower compared to the previous year (480 participants). The reason for this was due to disagreements in the registration process between the associations, which really messed up the registrations. Despite the reduced number of participants, the event last Saturday was well attended.
A total of 18 fighters from TV Becketal competed, including several athletes who celebrated their competition debut. The field of participants was international: there was also a fighter from Malta among the athletes, which gave the event a special flair. Grandmaster Bajrush Saliu, founder of the Taekwondo department, invited guests of honor for the occasion, including Grandmaster Mu In Kim from South Korea and Hwang Yong Kang from Cologne. Mutual appreciation and exchange between cultures are firmly anchored in Taekwondo.
A spectacular supporting program
A highlight of the event was the action show by multiple world record holder “Hammerhand” Muhamed Kahrimanovic. He impressively smashed stone and wood slabs as well as coconuts and demonstrated what it means to challenge skin and bones with a centimeter-thick concrete slab. Grandmaster Bajrush Saliu also got involved in the show and tried to smash some coconuts with a hammer - which didn't dampen his enthusiasm for martial arts. After the event, Saliu announced that he would continue to organize the Becketal Cup. His determination and commitment are contagious!
“I am pleased about the great response and commitment from parents and families,” praised Saliu. This spirit is also supported by the German Taekwondo Federation (DTB), whose main goal is to spread the Korean self-defense sport. The DTB not only attaches importance to popular sports, but also to national and international competitions, with training playing a central role in all areas of Taekwondo. This includes both elementary school techniques and competition-specific areas that help athletes develop and perfect their skills.
A sense of community in Taekwondo
The event once again showed how important community and solidarity are in Taekwondo. The sport's mission is to bring people together regardless of age, gender or ability level. Self-confidence, physical fitness and promoting health are the focus of the discipline. Great importance is also placed on developing inner peace and stress management skills.
Overall, the Becketal Cup 2025 has once again shown that Taekwondo is not just a sport, but also a way to promote quality of life and personal development. Fans and families joined together to celebrate the athletes' progress, and many will be looking forward to the next edition next year. The Becketal Cup remains an important part of the Taekwondo culture in our region.
