Drunken accident in Wiehl: 35-year-old has to hand over her driver's license!
Last Thursday afternoon, a careless traffic situation in Wiehl led to an accident, which once again draws attention to the dangers of driving under the influence of alcohol. A 74-year-old man wanted to turn left from Bielsteiner Straße onto Uelpestrasse in his Golf and collided with the Polo of a 35-year-old who wanted to turn right from Uelpestrasse onto Bielsteiner Straße. There was a collision in which the young driver hit the rear of the Golf oberberg-aktuell.de reported.
While recording the accident, the police noticed the smell of alcohol on the 35-year-old. A breath alcohol test carried out turned out to be positive, which meant that the woman had to hand over her driving license in addition to a blood sample. Such incidents are particularly common in the summer, when alcohol consumption increases, as the experts from the KFV warn. According to their information, almost a quarter of all alcohol-related accidents occurred in July and August.
Safe alternatives in summer time
Looking at the latest statistics on alcohol-related traffic accidents in Germany, published by the Federal Statistical Office, the need for action is clear. In the first quarter of 2022 there was the highest proportion of alcohol-related accidents in the last 30 years at 8.5 percent. There are around 2,300 such accidents nationwide every year, resulting in more than 2,900 injuries and 31 deaths. On average, 69 percent of the drivers involved are car drivers and 24 percent are cyclists, as shown statista.com is to be read.
The KFV experts urgently appeal to the responsibility of each individual: “Think about safe ways home in good time, be it by ridesharing or public transport.” This personal responsibility is more important than ever, especially in summer, when the number of alcohol-related accidents rises above average.
The most exciting summer moments in good company should not come at the expense of road safety. Everyone has a knack for protecting themselves and others - even if it requires a bit of thought and planning.
