125 years of Grün-Weiß Holten: Ceremony with the mayor and lots of fun!
The multi-disciplinary association Grün-Weiß Holten 1900 e. V. celebrated a very special anniversary on September 5th, 2025: 125 years of club history! The celebrations took place in the sports park on Bahnstrasse and offered a colorful program for young and old. Mayor Daniel Schranz and city sports association president Manfred Gregorius did not miss the opportunity to take part in this happy occasion and warmly congratulated the club on its long tradition and commitment.
In his speech, Schranz emphasized how important Oberhausen's sports clubs are for the health, integration and fun of its citizens. The club has masterfully understood how to preserve traditions and at the same time be open to new sports and developments. Grün-Weiß Holten was described not only as an integral part of sporting life in the region, but also as a modern club that looks to the future with positive charisma.
Anniversary celebrations
The anniversary weekend took place on August 30th and 31st, 2025 on the club premises. The opening was carried out at 11:00 a.m. by Mayor Daniel Schranz. Across both days, guests were able to enjoy a variety of activities including sports demonstrations and taster sessions ranging from football to darts and archery. A special highlight was the game between the traditional team Rot-Weiß Essen against Grün-Weiß Holten, which took place on Saturday afternoon.
There was a bouncy castle and football darts for the little visitors, while musical entertainment by the Emscherspatzen from 6 p.m. created a festive atmosphere. Sunday began with a children's flea market and continued with sports demonstrations as well as performances by the Blaue Funken children's guard and the musical finale by Carl de Wey.
Important support from the city
A central point of Schranz's speech was the support that the club has received over the years. In the last ten years, the city has invested over 30 million euros in various sports facilities, including 4.5 million euros in the Grün-Weiß Holten location alone. This underlines the city's commitment to promoting sport and the importance of clubs to the community.
The club, which was founded in 1900 by around 30 gymnastics brothers, has experienced a lot over the years. A merger with TV Holten in 1934 led to the founding of the gymnastics and games club in 1936. This look back at the club's history testifies to its continuous development and its ability to adapt to the needs of the community.
How sportmember.de As explained, associations in Germany have a long tradition that goes back to the 18th century. With over 500,000 clubs, Germany is the country with the highest number of club members in the world. These clubs are not only important platforms for leisure activities, but also promote essential social values and integration in the community.
Despite its age, Grün-Weiß Holten stands for dynamism and innovation. Looking back on the last 125 years and with a clear view of the future, the club remains a cornerstone of sport in Oberhausen. Mayor Schranz also thanked everyone who has shaped the club over the years and emphasized the club's voluntary commitment, community and, in particular, its youth support. There is always hope that the club will continue to play a positive role in society in the coming years.
We wish TuS Grün-Weiß Holten all the best for the next 125 years!
