Series of burglaries shakes Dorsten: Police warn of perpetrators!
The police in the Recklinghausen district are sounding the alarm: In the last few days there has been an unusual increase in break-ins, which also affect the city of Dorsten. Investigators report several incidents in which single-family homes were attacked. A house on the street “Auf dem Beerenkamp” was broken into on Sunday afternoon. The perpetrators got inside through a rear door in the winter garden and through the kitchen door and searched several rooms, stealing jewelry. They then fled undetected. In order to prevent future crimes, the police are asking residents and witnesses to report suspicious observations on 0800 2361 111.
But Dorsten is not the only city affected. The local police stations also recorded similar incidents in Castrop-Rauxel, Herten, Marl and Haltern am See. The burglars obviously focused on single- and multi-family homes and primarily stole cash and jewelry. It is striking that the crimes are often committed between 4 p.m. and 9 p.m., when many residents are absent or the shutters are closed.
Fall and winter slumps
The police warn that the number of burglaries tends to increase in the transitional months of autumn and winter. The risk of residential burglaries is particularly high in urban areas, with an increase in cases according to the results of the Statista report. In 2023, there were around 77,800 residential burglaries in Germany, which is the highest level since 2019. Experts recommend making your own four walls appear inhabited - for example through clever lighting or timers for lamps.
Easy-to-implement security measures such as sturdy window and door locks and attentive neighbors can deter burglars. Lockable window handles also increase security. The police appeal to citizens to always be vigilant and to act immediately if in doubt.
The psychological effects of burglaries
But it's not just the material loss that poses a problem. A break-in often also leaves psychological traces that can put a significant strain on those affected' sense of security. The consequences of a home break-in should not be underestimated: they range from violations of privacy to fear and insecurity in your own home. It is therefore important to think beyond the material damage and take proactive measures to protect yourself and your loved ones.
With this alarming situation, the police are aware that the number of cases has increased again after the corona pandemic. In 2023, an increase to 119,000 thefts was recorded, of which residential burglaries made up a significant portion. Citizens' needs for security must be taken seriously in order to maintain trust and a positive attitude to life in residential areas.
So stay vigilant, have a good hand in securing your home and remember: together we can ensure more security!
