Niederkassel commemorates: cleaning stumbling blocks to remember November 9th.
Next Sunday, November 9th, 2025, the citizens of Niederkassel invite you to a special commemoration. This day marks the anniversary of Kristallnacht, the terrible beginning of the state-organized terror against Jews under National Socialism. On the occasion of this sad event, the... Mach pulse, there will be a cleaning of the stumbling blocks that commemorate the deceased in the city.
The Stolpersteine, small brass memorial plaques measuring 10 x 10 cm, were laid by the artist Gunter Demnig in front of the last residential addresses of Nazi victims since 1992. There are a total of 35 of these stones in the Mondorf and Rheidt districts, which commemorate the fate of those who were persecuted, deported or murdered during National Socialism. Stumbling blocks are an important part of remembrance work and a form of decentralized commemoration that are now installed in many cities in Germany and beyond. Wikipedia paints an impressive picture of the project, which has been supported by a broad public since its initiation.
Procedure of the memorial event
The memorial campaign begins at 2 p.m. on the market square in Rheidt. From there, small groups break out to clean the stumbling blocks. Using metal or special brass cleaning agents, water, kitchen sponges and cloth rags, the participants make the stones shine. This honorable measure will culminate in a joint meeting at around 5 p.m. at the former synagogue in Mondorf, where there will be a contribution to the history of the Jewish community in Niederkassel and several symbolic contributions in memory of the victims.
Particular attention is paid to the stumbling blocks, which for many people represent an invisible connection to their own history. It is an opportunity for everyone to show their involvement and actively contribute to the culture of remembrance. The Colorful Café Niederkassel, which organizes the event, promotes exchange among citizens and is committed to combating racism and extremism as part of the “Niederkassel for Democracy” network.
