Win a pollard willow bonsai now for the Wesel district’s anniversary!

In the Wesel district, the 50th birthday is being celebrated with a very special competition: from June 30th to July 4th, bonsai lovers have the opportunity to win one of the five handmade bonsai trees. These unique plants are bonsai versions of the heraldic tree, the willow, and symbolize the close connection to the Lower Rhine homeland and its cultural landscape. District Administrator Ingo Brohl emphasizes that pollard willow is an important element of the region and contributes to the identity of the Wesel district, as Niederrhein Nachrichten reports.

But the competition is not just a celebration for garden lovers, but also a special project by the students of three special schools: Hilda Heinemann School in Moers, Bönninghardt School in Alpen and School am Ring in Wesel. In art class, the students made 200 individual clay pots into which the bonsais were planted. This creative commitment was already recognized on March 11, 2025 by District Administrator Brohl, who praised the diversity of the region and thanked the students for the great works. These pots represent not only art, but also the community and pride of the district, proclaims Lokaleblicke.

Anniversary celebrations throughout the district

The competition is just one of many events planned for the Wesel district as part of the anniversary year. The events calendar offers a range of cultural, historical and community activities. This gives citizens the opportunity to actively participate in the celebrations and explore the history of the district. The district administrator makes it impressively clear that “the anniversary year is an opportunity to strengthen the community and celebrate our beautiful home,” as can be read on the official website of the Wesel district: Wesel district.

Anyone who would like to take part in the competition should give a good reason why he or she deserves a willow bonsai - and the winners will ultimately receive a notification by email. The bonsais can then be picked up directly from the district administration in Wesel.

Overall, the anniversary not only shows the cultural identity of the Wesel district, but also the creative potential of the region's youth. The district is not only celebrating 50 years of existence, but also the future - a future that is also rooted in its own homeland.
