Nörvenich, Deutschland - In Germany, the upcoming Easter ensures increased pressure on the chicken courts. As tagesschau.de reports, the Federal Association of Ei expects rising egg prices. Wilhelm Püllen, operator of a chicken courtyard in Nörvenich near Aachen, now leads the family company in the fifth generation. With 40,000 hens, the farm produces around 30,000 eggs every day, which mainly develop on floor and free-range posture.
The chicken courtyard of Püllen is equipped with modern security measures, including disinfectants and various areas in which chickens are kept separate according to age. "The chickens only create brown eggs and belong to the Lohmann Brown breed," explains Püllen, while reporting on the numerous floors in the barn, which are equipped with base bars, drinking and feeding devices. Every day, 20 employees take care of the animals and the logistics of egg delivery.

In 2024, German egg production recorded an increase of 4.2 % compared to the previous year, which was about 13.7 billion eggs, so Destatis.de . Over 45.3 million laying hens were active in the recorded companies, with most of the eggs coming out of ground, even if a slightly declining trend can be observed here. The increase in ecological production, which now constitutes 14.1 % of total egg production, is particularly remarkable. Nevertheless, it turns out that Germany remains an import country for eggs, with a daily import of 12 to 15 million eggs from the Netherlands.
Future view and challenges
The challenges for egg producers are diverse. Bauer Püllen hopes for a reduction in bureaucracy by the new federal government to have more time for chicken care. He also plans the use of a robot with artificial intelligence to support egg laying in order to further increase the efficiency of his company.
Although production itself is not scarce, there is a lack of particularly cheap eggs. In 2024, the Germans increased egg consumption and consumed an average of twelve eggs more per person than in the previous year. This tendency shows that despite changing production conditions, the interest in eggs as a staple is unbroken and demand continues to increase.
