Air bomb in Mönkeberg: 1000 residents have to leave their houses!

in Schleswig-Holstein, the defusing of two aviation bombs from the Second World War caused excitement. At Mönkeberg on January 22, 2025, an American aviation bomb was discovered by the ordnance clearing service with a weight of 250 kilograms. This discovery caused a total of 673 households and more than 1,000 residents to leave their apartments. The deadline for this was set until 11 a.m.

The bomb defusing should only take place after it is ensured that nobody is in the restricted zone. The duration of the blocking is still unknown at the current time. The police recommend that the citizens concerned plan a absence of several hours and lead the relevant stocks such as food, drinks and medication. The town hall in Heikendorf is available as accommodation from 9 a.m., while the citizens' phone of the Schrevenborn office offers support for incoming residents.

defusing in Kiel-Elmschenhagen successfully

At the same time, another aviation bomb in Kiel-Elmschenhagen was defused on the same Sunday. This bomb, also 250 kilograms and also from World War II, had been discovered in exploratory work in an allotment garden colony. Here around 3,200 residents had to leave their apartments until 9 a.m. so as not to stand in the way of defusing. The entire evacuation and the subsequent defusing were easy.

The measures also led to the blocking of federal road 76 in the relevant region from 10 a.m. Interestingly, the ordnance clearing service had already successfully rendered four other aviation bombs in this area on March 10. These incidents show how important and necessary the activity of the ordnance clearing service in areas that were the aim of air strikes in the Second World War.
