Women's power in Würzburg: 10 years for more politics and visibility!

On October 25, 2025, the inter-municipal action day “Politics needs women” took place for the tenth time in Würzburg. Under the motto “Have your say. Help shape. Celebrate.” Lower Franconia's equal opportunities representatives invited women to take an active part in political events and to exchange ideas. The event aimed to encourage women to raise their voices and bring their perspectives into the political discussion, which is particularly important given the ongoing underrepresented role of women in political office, as the Federal Foundation for Equal Opportunity emphasizes.

The morning of the action day was organized by five different thematic tables where practical workshops took place. Monika Kraft discussed how to use “clear language” effectively, while Caroline Ruck presented valuable strategies for a confident appearance. Karen Wrigley-Simon and Ilona Sauer gave helpful tips on how to get into volunteer politics, and Alice Juraschek explained how to deal with resistance that women often encounter in politics. Laura Senger highlighted the importance of networking among women, which is often seen as the key to success, and appropriately shows that support among women in political circles can promote significant progress.

Panel discussion with prominent politicians

In the afternoon, an exciting panel discussion took place, including Kerstin Celina (MdL), Sabine Dittmar (MdB), Dr. Hülya Düber (Member of the Bundestag) and Angelika Krebs (Mayor) took part. These female politicians reported on their personal experiences in the political landscape and addressed the question of how to further strengthen the visibility and engagement of women. Despite the challenges that come with political engagement - women often face resistance and even threats - the participants reiterated their strong commitment, as mageurope aptly puts it.

The day of action not only offered a space for learning and networking, but was also a strong signal of the need to make women more visible in politics. With around a third of women in the German Bundestag, representation has been stagnating for over two decades, as the Federal Foundation for Equal Opportunity points out. This discrepancy is also evident at country level, where the proportion of women in leadership positions often lags behind that of men.

Commitment and thanks to the initiators

The organizers, including Petra Müller-März, Petra Oleschkewitz, Ilona Sauer, Birgit Seubert, Ute Sückfüll and the aforementioned Irmgard Krammer, who took part in the day of action for the tenth time, were praised for their tireless efforts. Such initiatives stimulate discussion about the strategies needed to promote women in politics, which is made difficult by structural barriers and social stereotypes. The day of action is not only a valuable contribution to political education, but also a clear call for equality that more and more women should respond to.

This event shows once again how important it is to offer women a platform to get involved and makes it clear that the path to equality in politics must be continued. In this sense, it is to be hoped that such initiatives will not only be continued, but also copied in other regions and contexts.
