Mamdani on the way to mayor: New York elections in focus!
Today, November 4, 2025, the world is glued to New York City, where crucial elections are taking place. The young and dynamic candidate Zohran Mamdani has an excellent chance of taking over as mayor, supported by ordinary citizens who resonate with his ideas. His political career is remarkable - from rapper to sought-after top politician, his path is anything but ordinary. Critics, however, claim that he is too left-wing and inexperienced for the established Democratic network in New York City.
Who is the man behind this budding career? Born on October 18, 1991 in Kampala, Uganda, Mamdani is the only child of a father with academic roots and a mother who works as a filmmaker. His family has Indian roots, with his parents combining different cultural backgrounds. At the age of seven, the family moved to New York City, where Mamdani grew up in Morningside Heights and combined his school education with a passion for politics and hip-hop.
Political views and engagement
Mamdani began his political career in 2015 and quickly made a name for himself as a member of the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA). His policy ideas include economic and housing reforms, including calling for an increase in the minimum wage to $30 by 2030. He also places a strong focus on social justice, environmental protection and immigrant rights. His vision for New York aims to make the city a place of inclusion and progress.
But while Mamdani is running for mayor, the political landscape in Germany is under pressure. Chancellor Friedrich Merz recently made it clear that he sees no need for asylum for Syrian refugees, which has sparked many political discussions about asylum policy. This is in contrast to the lenient statements made by Foreign Minister Wadephul, who recently stated that deportations to Syria would be limited.
The look forward
At the same time, a heated debate is developing in the SPD about winning back industrial workers, especially in view of the upcoming steel summit. The focus is on the planned industrial electricity price, which is to be introduced next year - an important issue that could attract voters' votes. However, criticism of chairmen Klingbeil and Bas is growing within the party.
There are also headlines at the international level: US President Trump is threatening Islamist forces in Nigeria with air strikes. These drastic measures were deemed necessary to protect Christianity in Nigeria, although observers report that there is no existential threat to religious freedom in the country. In this context, Foreign Minister Wadephul is meeting his Nigerian counterpart Yusuf Tuggar today.
What does this all mean for voters in New York and beyond? As is well known, the term “choose” is derived from the Middle High German “weln” and means the decision for something or someone. Whether voters vote for Mamdani or are interested in the current political trends in Germany - the chances are good that the upcoming elections will show the way forward.
