New dm market in Kaarst: Politicians and citizens celebrate the frequency provider!”

There will soon be a new attraction in the heart of Kaarst: the drugstore chain “dm” has announced that it will move into the former Penny market in the Maubiszentrum. This decision not only brings joy among citizens, but also has strong support from the political community. Ingo Kotzian, the leader of the CDU parliamentary group, emphasizes that the new branch will act as an “enormous source of traffic” for the city center. The CDU is thus taking another step towards strengthening central retail and sees the settlement as confirmation of its previous strategy.

Mayor Ursula Baum shares the positive expectations and emphasizes the cooperation between owners, politics and administration. She sees “dm” as an important stimulus for the city center. The Greens under parliamentary group leader Dominik Broda also welcome the drugstore chain's establishment. He points to the relevance of shops for everyday needs, which are intended to increase the city's attractiveness.

The settlement and its importance for the city center

The news of the new “dm” branch is no coincidence. According to a current Germany study by CIMAberatung + Management GmbH, the need for action to increase the attractiveness of city centers is urgent. In a survey, over 5,000 German citizens were questioned, with over 70% stating that they visit city centers primarily for shopping. Retail plays a central role here, as HDE President Alexander von Preen emphasizes: “Retail is indispensable for attractive city centers.”

This view is also well received in Kaarst. The SPD is also satisfied with the location in the Maubis Center. Parliamentary group leader Hildegard Kuhlmeier emphasizes that citizens have been demanding the establishment of a second drugstore for years. The settlement therefore also reflects the needs of the population.

Challenges of inner city development

But the settlement is only part of a broader strategy. The “Germany City Center Study” also lays bare facts on the table: Many potential customers avoid city centers, which are often perceived as too crowded. Cities need to find new ways to attract shoppers, especially after the coronavirus pandemic. Gastronomy, cleanliness and quality of stay also play a crucial role.

The German Trade Association (HDE) is vehemently in favor of political measures to improve these points. It is recommended to set up a central coordination point in order to bundle the interests of all actors and use them synergistically.

This shows that the establishment of “dm” could not only bring about a short-term improvement, but should also trigger lasting changes. It remains exciting to see how Kaarst city center will develop and what further steps are necessary to optimize the shopping experience for all citizens.
