Deadly air strike on Kyiv: At least 14 dead and 55 injured!
The terrible war in Ukraine is once again showing its cruel face. Over the weekend, a massive Russian airstrike on Kiev left at least 14 people dead and 55 others injured, according to the South Germans reported. Among the injured there are 40 people who need to be hospitalized, as Mayor Vitali Klitschko announced. In the city itself, 27 fires were reported in residential buildings, educational institutions and other infrastructure as a result of the attack.
The situation in Kiev was chaotic as reporters reported the sounds of drones and rockets, as well as huge explosions. The attack also disrupted the power supply, which further aggravated the situation. It is particularly tragic that a 62-year-old American died during the attack. This was ruled a natural death.
Scale of attacks and Ukraine's response
On Sunday night, Russia fired around 140 drones, 125 of which were intercepted. This is further evidence that Kiev remains a target of attack despite its normally robust anti-aircraft defenses. President Volodymyr Zelensky described the current attack as one of the worst since the beginning of the conflict and called for an appropriate response to these diabolical actions, such as ZDF today reported.
While Kiev suffers attacks, the port city of Odessa was not spared, where at least 13 people were injured in similar drone strikes. This shows that the threat is not limited to Kyiv. Ukraine has been fighting heroically against the Russian invading troops for over three years now.
International reactions and future developments
The attacks come as the G7 foreign minister meets in Italy to discuss further support for Ukraine. There is particular concern about possible future declines in US aid, particularly given a possible transition of power in the White House, with US President-elect Donald Trump already indicating he may reduce support to Ukraine. Reports from the daily news highlight the generally critical situation in which the NATO-Ukraine Council meeting took place in Brussels.
Overall, the current state of Ukraine brings not only human suffering but also geopolitical tensions. The West remains skeptical about how the situation will develop and the need to protect civilians in these bitter fighting is becoming ever more urgent.
