Things are once again simmering violently in the Middle East. On September 11, 2025, an Israeli military strike against the Hamas leadership in Qatar caused excitement and confusion in diplomatic circles. The South German reports that US President Donald Trump called the attack regrettable and made it clear that Qatar is a close ally of the US. His displeasure with the “unilateral bombing” in Qatar was made clear, as it did not serve Israel’s or the US’s goals.
Trump emphatically called for an end to the military clashes and the release of all hostages in the Gaza Strip. This is an issue that has been on the political agenda for a long time and such actions only make it more difficult. According to Trump, the US military informed the government of the plans for the attack in a timely manner, which Qatar vehemently objected to, saying that a US government official called only after the attacks began.
Diplomatic complications
Tensions between the USA and Qatar rose noticeably after this incident. NBC News quotes Trump, who did not agree with the attack and made this clear in his conversations with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and the Qatari Emir. Netanyahu, in turn, described the airstrike as “optimal and precise,” which adds another layer of complexity given the geopolitical situation.
The background to the military strike is a devastating Hamas attack on Israel in which 1,200 people were killed and around 250 were taken hostage. Another accusation that is being made is that Trump was not sufficiently informed about the attack plans. This could significantly jeopardize both the Middle East peace talks and US interests in the region.
The reaction of Qatari Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani was unequivocal. He called the attack an act of “treason.” This illustrates how shaky relations have become between the actors involved and that diplomatic efforts have also been significantly dampened. Trump tried to use his influence and talks to calm his partner Qatar, but this appears to be very complicated due to the timing of events.
A look at US foreign policy
US foreign policy has changed since the end of World War II and has always been a subject of political strife. Wikipedia describes how the USA has often intervened militarily in the past to advance its interests. Given the current incident, it is clear that the balance between isolationism and internationalism continues to be shaped by geopolitical paradigms.
In this regard, while Trump emphasizes that the elimination of Hamas is a valuable goal, the question must be asked whether such military measures can actually contribute to stability and long-term peace. The multilateral approach to peace talks and cooperation with allies like Qatar are crucial here - and this is exactly what is now in danger of being drowned in uncertainty.
