Cycling in the spa park: positive voices, but also a lot of criticism!

Bad Dürkheim, Deutschland - In January, the Kurparkach axis, a newly designed bike connection, was opened for bicycle traffic. Initial experiences show that the use of the cycle path is largely experienced, reports the chairman of the General German Bicycle Club (ADFC), Horst Bäuml. Nevertheless, there are also critical voices for implementation and the conditions in the spa park. These assessments come from an article that describes a sunny afternoon in April, where numerous walkers used the axis between Schlossgartenstrasse and Salinenstrasse through the spa park.

Germany has set itself the goal of becoming an attractive bicycle country. As part of the Federal Government's national cycling plan (NRVP), the vision "Bahradland Germany 2030" is pursued. According to an analysis by researchers: Inside at Fraunhofer ISI, which was carried out on behalf of the ADFC, many of the previous forecasts about the potential of cycling in Germany are insufficient and do not take into account the necessary soft factors such as the feeling of security in traffic.

Potential of cycling in Germany

The new potential assessment of the researchers: Inside, a model is used on a multinomial logistical regression and takes into account subjectively perceived factors instead of pure travel times and costs. Data from the “Mobility in Germany” (MID) (MID) 2017, as well as average grades from the ADFC and cycle path length from Open Street Map. Control variables such as age structure, topography, weather and season were also included.

The result of this modeling not only provides information about bicycle use and kilometers of people by 2035, but emphasizes how crucial subjectively perceived security and the quality of the infrastructure are for cycling use. In addition, the researchers recommend refining future analyzes through the elimination of random influences and using more recent data.

results of the bicycle monitor 2023

In parallel to these developments, the Federal Ministry of Digital and Transport (BMDV) carried out the "Bicycle Monitor 2023", which surveyed 4,003 citizens between the ages of 14 and 69 to their mobility habits. The results show that 46 percent of Germans want to ride a bike or pedelec more often in the future. A quarter even plans to buy a bike or pedelec within the next year.

  • Average issue: 1,424 euros per person
  • pedelecs popular: 48 percent of prospective buyers
  • Regular use of bicycle: stable at 39 percent

The study also showed that 60 percent of cyclists feel very and mostly when cycling, although the main reasons for uncertainty, according to the respondents, are ruthless behavior of car travel and a high volume of traffic. An important point is security on separate bike paths: 94 percent of those surveyed feel safe there.

In summary, it can be said that Germany is on the way to improve the conditions for cycling and have already implemented numerous measures to promote bike use. The findings from local projects such as the spa park axis can contribute to the successful further development of the national bicycle traffic plan and the infrastructure.
