Cycling and public transport: How to master the ticket jungle in Germany
The combination of cycling and local public transport is becoming increasingly popular in Germany. Whether for a relaxed day trip to nature to explore cities during vacation or to make the daily way to work more stress - many people appreciate the flexibility and environmental friendliness of this type of locomotion. At the same time, the search for the right ticket is often complicated, because the prices and regulations for bicycle transport vary greatly from city to city.
The used bike portal Buycycle recently took a close look at the 40 largest cities in Germany with regard to bicycle prices on bus and train. In their analysis, the conditions in 40 cities and 22 transport associations were taken into account, with both the prices for day tickets as well as the fees for taking bicycle treatment and distances within the respective composite areas.

The results of the investigation show that almost a quarter of the cities examined enables the free take away bicycles in public transport. This is a step towards a future -oriented mobility. Nevertheless, cyclists should find out about possible exceptions and blocking times before driving. For example, an additional ticket is necessary in many cities at certain peak times - usually from Monday to Friday between 6 a.m. and 9 a.m.
In cities such as Wiesbaden and Mainz, passengers can take their bike with them at no additional costs in buses and trams, while restrictions apply in Hanover and the bicycles may only be transported free of charge at certain times. Here, bicycles during the week can only be taken away for hours outside of the morning rush hour without additional fees.
The cheapest cities for cyclists
The cheapest city for cyclists is Saarbrücken. Here a day ticket costs 5.60 euros and the bicycle collection is free of charge - however, an additional ticket is necessary for trips before 9 a.m. Overall, the local transport association SaarVV does best because a day ticket costs only 10.20 euros for the entire state, whereby additional fees of 4.50 euros are incurred for early trips.
In contrast to this, cities like Berlin are in contrast, where the prices for using public transport by bicycle are high. A day ticket for the entire city costs 11.40 euros and an additional 5.90 euros is due for the bicycle. The take-away is also only allowed in the S and U-Bahn, which significantly limits the options for cyclists.price differences between transport associations
The analysis shows that there are significant price differences not only in the cities, but also between the transport associations. The Rhein-Sieg Verkehrsverbund represents the bottom, where a day ticket costs an incredible 34.20 euros. This is in contrast to transport associations such as SaarVV, where a comparable ticket only costs 10.20 euros. Similar high prices can also be found in the North Rhine-Westphalia network, where cyclists have to pay 34.80 euros for the "Schönertagticket".
For cyclists who want to travel beyond city limits, every city and every network must be carefully checked. Depending on the provider, the regulations for taking bicycle and costs can fluctuate, which requires precise planning.

The analysis also revealed that the owner of a folding wheel in particular has fewer difficulties, since they often do not incur any additional fees.
