Discover Brasschaater: An unforgettable day in Bad Neuenahr!
On Saturday, August 2, 2025, the charming streets of Bad Neuenahr-Ahrweiler became the scene of a warm exchange between Belgium and Germany. A group of interested citizens from the partner municipality of Brasschaat visited the beautiful Ahrweiler on a joint citizens' trip. The first preparations for this unifying tour were made in the previous weeks, and the result was an all-round successful event that further strengthened the neighborly ties View current reported.
The day started with a shared breakfast that got us excited for the day of discovery ahead. A guided city walk through the old town of Ahrweiler allowed the participants to experience the historical sights up close. They didn't miss the St. Laurentius Church and the White Tower and also had the opportunity to visit the Rifle Museum and the former synagogue. Such experiences not only promote understanding of each other, but also shared history and culture.
Activities and experiences
After the guided tour, the participants had enough time to explore the city on their own. The weather was inviting and the group took advantage of the free time to take a break in one of the many cozy cafés. Another highlight on the program in the afternoon was a visit to the German Senior Tennis Championships in the picturesque Leneé Park. Such events connect citizens and strengthen the community, whether in Belgium, Germany or beyond.
Another nice moment of the day was the stop at Brasschaat square at Bad Neuenahr train station. Here one particularly felt the importance of town twinning, which is not only based on official documents, but is primarily lived through personal interaction. The crowning conclusion of the trip was at the Lingen winery, where the participants were able to enjoy the fine wines of the Ahr wine. After a delicious dinner, the group headed home to Brasschaat, with beautiful memories and new acquaintances in their luggage.
Promote future encounters
Such citizen trips are not only a beautiful tradition in Bad Neuenahr-Ahrweiler. The city of Brasschaat itself is also planning a similar tour on July 19, 2025, which will bring the city's citizens closer to the architecture and culture of its sister city. In addition to guided city tours, culinary highlights are also not neglected. Bad Neuenahr-Ahrweiler encourages you to register in good time!
The important role of city twinning, as can also be found in many other cities such as Frankfurt, the pioneer in this area with 18 twin cities worldwide, should not be underestimated. Such connections originally contributed to reconciliation after the Second World War and are now more than ever designed to promote intercultural exchange and enable personal encounters. A brilliant example of this exchange is the active time that citizens and young people of the twin cities can regularly spend together. Frankfurt shows how effective such programs are - student and club exchanges are particularly on the agenda here, and the topics of culture and science are also promoted.
The citizens' trip to Bad Neuenahr-Ahrweiler was certainly a complete success and another step in the right direction to deepen the mutual understanding and friendship between the neighbors in Belgium and Germany. Who knows where the next journey will lead?
